Greetings!

Does anyone here have any experience reloading with the Federal Champion small pistol primers? Have you experienced any feed problems using a progressive press? Have these primers demonstrated reliable ignition?

As always, thanks in advance for your help!

I've used them in a Dillon 550 and a few in an old Star Progressive. The primers have never caused in problem with either. This is not to say I've never had primer problems with the Dillon, but they came from problems with the press itself, not the primers.

Back in my PPC days Federal primers had the reputation of being softest and easiest to ignite. They were much sought after shooters with tuned revolvers with weaker mainsprings. OTOH, at least one manufacturer of reloading presses suggested not using them because they were soft and easy to set off. I don't remember offhand which manufacturer it was.

I've used them and have never had any problems. In fact I prefer the Federal Primers over most - although these days I'll buy whatever is available.

The only thing I dislike about the Federal Primers is the overly large "shoe box" they come in which makes storage a pain in the arse.

Lee does'nt recommend using Federal primers. I have used alot of Federals with a Lee hand primer with out a problem.

I've loaded tens of thousands of rounds with Lee progressive loaders using Federal primers. Never one issue. In the few instances where the primer got cockeyed and I loaded it sideways into the primer cavity, never has one set off.

I've never seen much difference in any of the American made primers. You are good to go.

Probably if it wont ignite a Fed it wont light anything else. Cant help with the progressive press aspect but Feds are very easy to ignite. My 627 is a range only gun and just about everything about it is set up to be about as light as possible and Feds always go bang in it.

To start, I've loaded with those quote a bit, on both a single stage and a Dillon 550C. Never any issues.

With that said, those are my go-to for 38 spcl loads in my tuned S&W 627. As light as the hammer strike is now, it will not properly ignite magnum primers or some non-mag that are a bit harder (like Win or CCI). Now, I don't know if this is gospel or not, but someone I trust told me the Fed primers are softer than most and thus recommended that I run them in a tuned revolver.

If there were problems with Federal primers there'd be people online complaining about it everyday...

All of the American primers are pretty good and consistent. The packaging with Federal is the biggest draw back. Typically Federal primers ran a $1 or $2 more per thousand, but at this point it time it's just a matter of finding anything you can.

For use in revolvers with a reduced power mainspring Federal is the preferred brand.
