My father-in-law had a 12 gauge Browning automatic shotgun from the 60s that was his deer gun. It saw a lot of use, used, but not abused, honest wear.
Danny, a frequent hunting partner, admired the gun, the two of them had a nickname for it, Betsy or something like that.
After my father-in-law passed, my mother-in-law, offered me the choice of one of his guns. The collection was modest. Seriously considered the Browning but after reflection chose a Remington 870 and told her that Danny would appreciate the Browning.
Later on, Danny approached me and expressed his appreciation.

If you are talking about a Browning Belgium made A5, that is my favorite semi auto SG. I have bird hunted with it along with my Browning Superposed for the lions share of the last 40 years. Yes - it is an antiquated design but has never failed me and is completely reliable. I also use it for trap, skeet and sporting clays when not using my Superposed. At one time I owned well over a dozen and a half SG's but have recently sold a bunch because I never used them much after the two Brownings were purchased 40+ years ago. I think I am down to 6 or 7 now. To me, the vintage Belgium made Brownings are the benchmark to judge other shotguns by.

Antiquated is relative. I have an A5 with the old Garand
style safety that is a magnificent house gun with a
short barrel.
I also have a pair of old Savages with spare short barrels.
These three are as good as any of the newer units in
my opinion.

While a lot of people like the Auto-5 just fine, sometimes it takes a certain person to truly appreciate them. You did a good thing.
