Finally wore my 342 out!!!

I have wondered about the integral cylinder stop on modern alloy frames for a while; that just seems like a weak element to the design.

What is to prevent a competent gunsmith from polishing off the entire dogleg/teardrop/whatchamacallit (which I think is unattractive anyway), then drilling for and inserting a steel plug that would recreate the old style detente system?

Sure it could be done easily, mill off the leg then drill for the standard lug.

But like said it will void the warrantee.
Send it back and demand they fix it!

joni,

S&W did pay for the shipping both ways, so I'm not out any money. I'm not going to bother getting this gun fixed, I'm just going to sell it off and buy something different....I still have 2 342's in great condition I'll keep.

I have seen some hard used old style Smiths wear and get sprung to the point the cylinder will over ride the replaceable stop. Replacement of the old style stop is not hard but that does not do you any good. I have a 642 and I have a couple replacement stops. If that gun wears out, it is getting modified.

It's aluminum. I was a little bit bummed out when I noticed the crack although honestly it may have been cracked for awhile, I may have just not noticed it before. The 340PD doesn't get much use so I'm a little disappointed it broke at a relatively low round count. (all factory loads in this gun)

Thanks. I was just wondering if it was the scandium alloy that failed. I have a couple of 1911's with frames made out of that stuff and haven't heard of any failures with it to date. I'm sure you'll get yours back in better than new condition. Best of luck with it.

SMITH will replace the frame if they have any.our repace it with a new mod. This would be a good time to up grade.
