I've got five Sigs now: 226, 2022, 229, 320, P6. I think I want one more, a P220 in 9mm.

Wondering how common they are, where they can be found, and what the price range is for a shooter. Also, how they compare to any of the Sigs I already have in terms of shooting, etc.

I never see any on Gunbroker (about the only auction site I use....anyone have any other good ones?); arms list is devoid of any....and I keep looking locally here in Western Washington but no go so far. I also look for Browning BDA in 9mm but no joy there either.

I've ruled out anything other than 9mm, the only non-nine pistol I have is a 32 ACP PP clone by FEG, so .45 and .380 are probably out the running for now.

I have no problem with the heel mag release (it'll be a range gun) and for some reason the gun just appeals to me...same as the older Berettas (1951 and 92s) and my Hi Power called out to me. There's something about those older single stack 9s I like.

So, any advice aside from "keep looking?"

thanks in advance. (and if anyone wants to post a pic of theirs....I love to see them.)

I love SIGs, especially the P220 family. I have owned and been shooting them for just under 4 decades now.

9MM P220s are difficult to find. KEEP LOOKING. Put WTB ads on this Forum and other Forums that you belong to. Join the SIGforum if you are not already a member and post a WTB there as well. Then get your rabbit's foot out, place it on your four leaf clover and set them under your horse shoe because you will need luck in finding one

When one does show up, odds are it will be expensive (even a shooter), especially if the only place you are looking is Gun Broker.

I do not have my 9MM P220 photographed but here are some of my other P220s

220familys.jpg

The one on the bottom right is the first P220 45 I ever shot, I bought it in 1978 and it is still in my safe along with all these others. This one is marked Browning BDA and was on display at the 1978 Shot Gun News Trade Show as a sample of a plated BDA/P220.

The top one on the left is the first P220 45 I owned that had a dovetailed front sight. I bought it just to have tritium sights on the pistol without having to machine the slide, that was 24 years ago.

Then there is my first stainless P220 45 bought 13 years ago

The lower left P220 is my 38 Super. This was found in a local gun shop just 16 years ago.

I own several other P220s including 5" variants and a nice P220 chambered in 10MM Auto (pictured with my MP5/10) and finally a 45ACP P220 Sport

I came across my 9MM P220 at a small online/catalog auction house called Old Town Station. It is the American version and came with 3 magazines . . . . That was 8 years ago

As I type, a suppressed P226 sits on the credenza behind my desk.

I hate u soooo much.lol, you have the one gun that I've wanted forever. And another gun that I wanted just recently. Number one being the MP5 chambered in 10mm( really hate you over that one) and next one is the P220 chambered in 10mm that's a new hate since that gun isn't that old but it's still hate. LOL. If you ever think about selling the mp5 10 please let me know. That's the gun that made me want to get into firearms in the first place at 18 yrs old (im 34 now) and the mp5/10 is the one gun that I just can't never seem to get my hands on. How hard would it be to build one out of a pre bent 80% flat?

Here is my sig p220 .45, Barstow match extended ported barrel, and crimson trace laser grips ( which were the main cause of me starting out making my own lasers since my Crimson Trace are absolutely useless in the daytime where my custom built lasers are visible hundreds of yards in broad daylight!!

I kept an eye out for a P220-1 9MM with the "American" mag release for ages. Don't recall ever seeing a one in a shop or at gun shows large or small. Within the last couple years I found two LNIB/unfired on SIG enthusiast forums. Bought them both. Just sold one, unfired. The other, I did shoot a little and still have. I was trying out a set of factory thin grips on the one I kept when this photo was taken.

I'd say do what I did. Check auction sites and enthusiast forums. In the fullness of time, you'll see what you want pop up for sale. Some folks have been lucky enough to stumble across these at their LGS or gun show, but over a period of years, I was never so fortunate. But perhaps you will be.

On second look, I didn't see you at your MP5 has the labeling for Full Auto. If it is a full auto then scratch the idea of me ever buying it, I really don't have the money to dish out for a tax stamp nor do I want to. But if it's semi keep me in mind

Not all that common. They originally came in as BDA 9 in the 80s. They started as heal release and eventually switched to push button. I've owned one not that long ago, a Geneva Switzerland police P220 made in 1977. I've never actively looked for one but that was the first and only one I've seen

That's what that line of red bullets at the top means. If it had the 3 shot burst, there'd be a stop with three red bullets between one and all of them . . .

They're out there, but very uncommon. That 220 is a lot of frame for a 9mm. I prefer the 225 for a single stack 9mm Sig.

colt_saa, thanks for sharing the P220 pics. Nice. I've been looking for a side release 38 Super for a long time. Only ones I've come across once in a blue moon are heel release. And I missed the boat on a 10mm. Hope SIG puts it back in production.

I had one of the "Montage Suisse" 9mm P220s and sold it. Great gun. But, as previously mentioned, it is pretty large for a single stack 9mm. I liked my P225 a lot more. They are out there if you keep looking.

I also once had a P220 in .30 Luger. That's the one you NEED!! :)

There isn't a .38 Super on your list either......

You did not miss the boat on a P220 chambered in 10MM Auto, they are available today. Who told you they are out of production?

My 10MM Auto P220 is an easy 5 or 6 years old now. Great little firearm.

This one came through Operation Desert Storm, grips are from Thailand, found them on E Bay, the original grips were broken. Sent it to Bruce Gray for his magic work and she is a favorite, trigger just right she is very accurate. This one is very early production. I like the heel release better than side release.

My friend picked up one at a gun show last year it is also a sweetheart, he got a deal because the seller could not find anyone else who wanted a heel release.

I saw a well worn 9mm BDA Euro release here in a pawn shop a few years ago for around $900. One mag, no box.

I passed.

Sigs, my "other" addiction

P220-1 9mm's are somewhat difficult to come by. About 12 years ago I was lucky enough to find two new in the box, sequentially numbered P220-1 9mm's. It took me over 5 years to convince their owner to sell them to me, but now they are mine. The same person that had them also has another one that will one day be mine (not sequentially numbered to my other two).

Keep searching the on line auction sites and join the Sig Forum and place a WTB add in their classifieds. They come up for sale there every now and then.

a little more P220 porn

I was able to put together a set of BDA's in all three calibers that were offered in the mid to late 70's - 9mm, 45acp, and 38 super.

and finally, another difficult to find Sig is the P220-1 chambered in 38 super. Sig only made then in 1994 and early 1995. I had two of them, but I sold them to buy more S&W's ;)

This one was test fired only and complete with the box, docs, and test target

and this super clean and complete 1987 P220-1 45acp

There are a few other more ordinary P220's that I have also sold. I had over 30 P220's at one time, but the S&W bug hit hard! I still have 10 or so left and they are among my favorite Sigs.

My 10MM Auto P220 is an easy 5 or 6 years old now. Great little firearm.

I've poured over every P220 shown on the SIG website but do not see a 10mm currently offered.

Also looking for a non-night sight P226 357 SIG, but apparently they only come with night sights. I want a different night sight, so will probably have to pull them and sell them.

OK, found the only 10mm offered right now. Skipped by it because it was dipped in some sort of zombie apocalypse camo. And it has a SAO trigger. Did some online searching and found that there were four 10mm's offered in 2015. Three of them have SAO triggers, and that's a deal killer. I already have a Colt 10mm Delta Gold Cup, and I doubt the SIG is going to shoot as accurately. The SA/DA offered is a target model. Tempting, but pricey. I really want a plain SA/DA 10mm with no frills, preferably in stainless with a black finish, but a carbon steel version or stainless would be OK. Don't need a beavertail, two tone, target sights (want night sights), etc. Will just patiently wait and see.

You guys got me thinking, so I dug out the inventory list. I've had a 9mm P220 w/ heel clip sitting in the bottom of a safe somewhere for about 25 years, along with an NIB 357 Sig P229 from about 15 years ago. Now all I need to do is figure out what else I'd rather have; they're not eating anything, just hangin' around. I think I once got a 40 barrel for the P229, but haven't seen it for a long time, and never installed it. Ain't procrastination grand?

Out of idle curiosity, what would folks say are the "competitors" to the 220 in terms of single stack hammer fired 9s of a certain age? I've had/have a bunch of Smith & Wesson 39 and 59 series guns and I like them a whole lot.

I also have one of the older Berettas, a 1951 and a Walther P5, which I imagine is similar build quality. I really like my P6 and had trigger work done on it by Sig so the trigger probably is as good as a 225.

So what else is in the same league? Walther? Colt (nah, no early nines and I just bought their new Gov't Competition). I've got a Hi Power. I've got a hole in the safe for a 9mm single stack...and I'd like to fill it with a quality gun...not necessarily a collector piece, but a good shooter.

I'd like to get a Walther P5. I have the smaller P5 Compact, and have used it as a carry gun as the next step up from my S&W Model 12. The reason I want the P5C is it can easily be threaded, while the P5 Compact is very difficult. So far no one wants to thread. Aftermarket threaded barrels are available for the P225 and there's supposed to be someone modifying P226 threaded barrels to fit. (I don't know what the difference is, don't have a 226 anymore to check against.) If the P225 works out OK, then the need for a P5 becomes moot. The P5 is technically a better suppressor host because the barrel moves fore and after in a straight line, whereas the P225 uses a modernized Browning pattern tilting barrel (no link).

But if you want some quality single stack 9's that are different from what you already have, look at a P38 or even a Luger.
