Today I went out to the Dunes and fired another 200 rounds of 9mm using a S&W 9mm barrel in my M&P40 using the .40 magazines. This time I fire 150 rounds of WW white box and another 50 rounds of Federal. These two ammos function totaly different when fed through a .40 cal magazine. The first time I went out I fired 150 rounds of Federal and had one failure to feed. Today, the first 150 were the WW white box and I had approx one random failure to feed about every two magazines. So, about one in twenty. Additionaly, the WW would not feed the last round. After that was all used up I fired the last 50 Federals and did not have one failure of any kind. Always fed the last round too. Not sure why the difference. Obviously there is something different between the two. Remember now, this is using a .40 cal magazine, NOT a 9mm. Fired another 100 rounds of .40 cal and of course no problems there. One interesting thing (at least to me) is that I had really expected the 9mm to be more accurate since it has a little less recoil but, the two calibers seem to hit about exactly the same. At least for me. Also, I've not had a single extraction problem with any of the 9mm's.

Just got a S&W 9mm barrel today from Midway. Test fit didn't go so well. I'll have more time on Wednesday to mess with it. Got two magazines also. Once it was installed, tried to chamber a round and it wouldn't go(ftf). JHP might have been the issue but a thorough clean and polish might help. Barrel sure is snug compared to the 40.

Took some pics of the two barrels. The "new" m&p 9 I ordered shows more wear than my 40 does with over a 1000 rounds. The ramp looks polished for some reason too. Going to send my concerns and pics after I take some smaller size pics. I'll post some here once I take them in the right size. Right now they are 2.5mb each. Too big for here!

My 40 on the left and "new" S&W M&P factory 9mm on the right. For an age comparison, I bought mine new in October 2007.

Supposed to be a factory new that looks used. Got this from Midway. Message I got back from them said if you exchange it you will probrably still need a gunsmith to fit it. Most everything I've read is drop in and go. I guess it's going back and try again.

I think sometimes you get a fluke barrel... Send it back and get what ya paid for. I purchased a storm lake that didn't fit and it said I may need smithing and you could see where/why it didn't fit. The next fit nice. If I bought new, I wouldn't want some beat up looking part either.

Maybe it's one of those new barrels used from the M4Carbine crew that keeps sending their 9mm guns back because they can't hit a bullseye at 100 yards.. S&W swaps out a barrel and sends them back...

Storm Lake barrel

I received my SL barrel and took it to the range this morning. Fired 50 rounds 124 gr NATO with NO problems. Accuracy was about 2 1/2 inches at 25 feet. That's about as good as I can do with these ancient eyes. My VTech shot about half that in accuracy but that is a straight 40 S&W. I also fired a 9 in a 40 frame which is a threaded barrel and it was a good as the SL.

I've been following all the threads on the 40-to-9 barrel conversion since I purchased my M&P40c back in late 2010. Having purchased a FS M&P40 for my wife's USPSA competition several months ago, I thought she might find the 9mm round a bit more controllable. Ordered a S&W barrel from Midway which arrived Monday and we ran a box of Winchester White Box (100 rounds) through it yesterday.

First, the barrel was a drop-in... just like the .40 cal barrel in every way except for the caliber. (Sorry JHC77 to hear your bad experience.) Second, the function was flawless with no FTF, FTE. Third, 6 of 8 mags held and fed rounds without fault until the last round. The slide locked back every time with one round in the mag. 2 mags would not keep rounds. ( The ears at the top of the mag were probably a bit too wide.)

I have mags ordered from 44Mag and we will see how the system functions with that combination.

By the way, my wife prefers the 40 S&W to 9mm Lugar. So much for saving ammo costs on her shooting.

Sent it in for an exchange. Hopefully they are still in stock when it gets turned around.

Clarify this to me a little more - Did you install a S&W 9mm bbl into a .40 slide & frame or did you get a .40 to 9mm conversion barrel like the Storm Lake product? I was under the impression that a standard M&P 9mm bbl would not work due to the case & head differences and that a conversion bbl was needed.

I have a M&P 40 compact that I would like to get a 9mm bbl for. Will the std S&W brand M&P 9mm replacement bbl work or is a "conversion" type required?

I would also like a 357 Sig but only see the barrel offered in regular length, not compact.

I have 2 threaded S&W barrels and 1 SL barrel in my 40 frames and all I did was switch out the barrels. I did get a 45 ACP barrel for the M&P that was also threaded. All worked excellent but the Smith's were more accurate so far. Only 50 rounds thru the SL barrel.

Standard S&W 9mm barrel in my M&P40fs. Only problems I'm having is an occasional failure to feed because I'm using the .40 cal magazines with 9mm ammo. I'm considering buying a 9mm magazine even though the 40 cal mags work fine for target practice.. Honestly, I don't see how a "conversion" barrel could be any different. The outside dimensions have to be the same as the S&W barrel in order for it to fit and function. And of course, the chamber and bore also have to be the same.
