First ever Revolver...686-6 4in

Be careful, they will grow on you.

Yep, next you'll be eyeing up those sweet 2 1/2 inch snubbies. Then you could carry it everyday, eh! Nice thoughts...

Maybe 6 rounds, maybe 7 or....the brand new Performance Center 2 1/2 inch model. Wooe! Ain't gun love nice wid a 686.

Most lovers of the 686 would agree that the king of 686s is your four inch model. Ya done good.

That is a most excellent choice for your first revolver.

Being able to go from 38 Special target wadcutters, up to full power 357 Mags, in the same handgun, makes it a most fun and most useful gun.

Great choice...think most have already posted excellent replies already. I too recently joined the ranks of 686 ownership. I have to say it's a beautiful piece of workmanship and I don't know if I got super lucky but my 686 is as near perfect, finish wise, as I can tell. In fact a friend remarked it almost felt like it had been dehorned. I have already swaped out the grips to Arhend combats round butts. Really stepped up the looks for me. Very comfortable in the hand and the balance of the 4.2" just feels right no matter if its .38s or .357
heading down range. Enjoy.
Funnily my other HG is a Glock 17, swapping between them at the range is a lot of fun.

The 686 4in. Is certainly a great revolver. Maybe the best all purpose revolver made today. I'm a big fan myself. Enjoy!

Revolver rivival

My son just turned of age for me to get back into shooting (no guns at home up to a certain age agreement with mom). I took out my Model 36 (c.1959) chief special and introduced it to him. Also had a Ruger MKII .22 for him to learn. He loved the Chief Special, especially double action. So we set out to research and start "our" collection. Well guess what the prize winner was, a 686 3in to start the show. Your advise and words have confirmed what I believe to be one of the best revovlers out there. New to the Forum, and am looking forward for the experience on S&W.
By the way, I picked up a 5906 to train him on an automaitc.

Well now, that's a great pair of Smiths to have fun with PJThomas. I also have that set, and I've always thought they have a lot in common. Similar weight and heft with all that steel and the double stack grip of the 5906. They both take all you can feed them with no complaints. Great choice - enjoy.

retire a chief's special?

hey all,
thank you for the welcome. I was advised by my local S&W collector to retire my Chief's Special model 36 c. 1959 with diamond walnut grips and crest. Any thoughts? I replaced it with the 686 3" 357.

Retire a Chief's Special?

What was the reason given? I have a one from the mid-50s and can't imagine why I would retire it. Hey, it's not a 686, but it is still a great little gun!

The reason is that it has only about 25 rounds through it, by me just recently, and it is in presitne condition. But I love the size and weight especially to carry. Again it is a good lookgin piece.

That makes sense. We would all love to see a picture! Mine is very well used, not much finish left at all, and makes a perfect glove compartment gun.
