First fondle of the SD

Great Pics! Kinda looks to me that the sear is much further back in the SD frame than the Sigma frame, meaning striker will be held back quite a bit further in the SD than in the Sigma. Much less trigger effort in "cocking" the striker, should result in a much lighter trigger.

S&W had a table set up at the Carolina Cup this weekend. One of the guns on the table was the SD40. They didn't have any .40 ammunition, so I couldn't shoot it, but I did handle and dry fire it.

Grip feels the same, or almost the same, as my 9VE. The trigger pull had the long reset of the Sigma, but a much lighter pull, closer to that of the M&P. Overall I liked it. I could see getting a SD9 eventually.

I did shoot a 386 Night Guard. Nice, seemed like a good carry gun, but not nearly as slick as my well used 681.

So - SD as a replacement for the Sigma line?

Sounds to me like the plain jane Sigma won't be
around much longer.

I stopped into Cheaper Than Dirt today and got to see and hold my first SD. Grip is very close to the Sigma. Slide of the Sigma seemed a hair wider overall. That may be just perception due to the front slide serrations on the SD. Trigger of the SD was way better than the Sigma. The SD had a smooth and very consistent pull that felt much lighter than the Sigma. Price at CTD was $449 on the SD. CTD had the Sigma marked at $399. For a $50 difference I would definately go with the SD. But who would ever pay $399 for the Sigma?

I'm going to get an SD, but I am waiting for the next gunshow in hopes of finding a price closer to Bud's advertised $408.

I went to my local gun store up here in Valpo Indiana to get a new duty holster and some hogue wrap arounds for my 40ve and got to fondle the SD40 a little bit.
First off...they had a price tag on it of $529!!! I thought to myself "WHOAAAA if i'm gonna drop that kind of dough, i'm going for a glock or HK or MP"
Overall it felt nice and very familier like my sigma with the exception of the lighter trigger and the grip. The grip feels smiliar to the sigma in the size and shape but the texture is much more like an MP.
My overall opinion is that it is the lovechild of the MP and the Sigma, why the store had such a steep price? I don't know, i'm guessing they took the MSRP from S&W and put it on. It is different from the sigma...but not different ENOUGH! Now if I found one for around $350 (law enforcement discount on a glock 23 is $362.) I might look into picking it up but until than, I will stick with my sigma!

so, what is the little oval rough section in the front of the slide take-down lever? I assume that is for thumbs forward grip? I was thinking about putting a small thing of skateboard grip tape up there.

That is for the Ayoob style finger off the trigger position. When you take your finger off the trigger you place it up on the frame in the same location each time, and it makes it easier to practice the shift.

Ya know I saved the picks and blew them up so i can get a better look and other than a beefier ejector and a change in the design of the sear block ( and a small one at that) they look the same ( althought its hard to see if there is a pigtail spring) the uppers look exactly the same internally only difference is the exterior slide machining, the sd9/40 seemed to be a little more refined mechanically like a next evolution.

Sear block is very different hard to describe without pictures, but the sliding cam is gone, only one moving part, the swing arm, and the only spring left is the pigtail spring.

Cut my own post off. Does anyone know of any reviews of the SD? S&W will probably come down on it's price eventually. Maybe under $400..........?

They're about $385 all over the internet (SD40 and SD9)Go to gun genie....

Smith & Wesson SD40 Semi-Auto Pistol

Great weapon, I sure like mine.
The trigger is far better than the Dungma yet not as good as the M&P, but for the bucks their is no better deal out there.

Handled my first SD40 today and it felt just like my Sigma 40VE. The price at the local gunshop was $449 and some change which I thought was kinda on the high side. If I didn't already have three handguns chambered in the 40S&W I probably would acquire an SD40 although I probably would buy it over the internet cause I can get it for about $85-$90 cheaper than at the local gun shop.

I'm thinking about getting a SD40... I have the SD9, have been handloading the .40 S&W for my M&P40, and have the urge to get a SD40 help to shoot the handloads. I load a little down, to lessen recoil, but above the "start load" for each bullet type.

My SD9 is quite a remarkable gun. Functions beautifully. Yes, the trigger is a little longer and the pull stronger -- but this is fine for a self-defense gun. Am waiting to see if Flork has any mods coming out to make it a little smoother. My M&Ps have Apex mods and my Sigs are DA/SA... the SD9 is my carry gun while hiking in the woods -- high cap, dead on reliable, safe to carry.
