I'm a new member and this is my first post on this forum. I'm a huge fan of S&W products.

I have a stainless .44 mag., 4" tapered barrel with wood grips. The finish is what I would call beaded-blasted (dull) and there is no "Mountain Gun" inscription on the gun. I bought it slightly used many years ago and am considering selling it. I'd like to know what I'm dealing with (or at least talking about) before I sell it.

Any information is most welcome.

The first set were called Mountain Revolver and came out about 1991 or '92. I don't recall the dash number. I thought they were roll marked Mountain Revolver instead of the laser etched Mountain Gun, but I might be wrong. I almost bought one of the originals, but opted for a used Python that was also in the display case. Couldn't quite afford both. I have to admit, the Python value has appreciated more than the Smith.

Good decision on your part. I've always regretted selling a .357 Python for reasons I can no longer recall.

On my revolver there are no odd markings and the metal finish is quite different from most S&W finishes.

Welcome to the forum lawguy.

If you search this 1980 to the present forum using "Mountain Revolver" in quotes you'll find pictures of Mountain Revolvers like yours, opinions on value, etc. They were made in 1989. You're right they were not marked Mountain Revolver. The majority of the threads the Search brings up are on Mountain Guns which are the same except for a name change applied to the next production run and a change in finish.

There are probably over 100 Model 629 variations , Can you post a picture? it is worth 1000 words.
Here is a pic of the 629-2 "Mountain Revolver" product code 103652
The most notable features are the Chamfered cylinder edges, 4" Tapered barrel, smooth combat trigger, round butt and pinned black FS,
Note pre MIM and pre IL, flash chromed hammer/trigger and hammer mounted firing pin.
The Pachmayer grips were original from the factory on this model, about 5000 made in 1989/1990.
The first "Mountain Gun" was the 629-3 in 1993 as I recall.

I have one like pictured above. Cool gun. Don't shoot it much though.

William,
I've tried to follow the Mountain Gun style revolvers since they came out. The first .45 Colt M.G. was a 1996 625-6. Some folks like them partly because they were pre-lock. Ignoring the earlier square butt revolvers, the first Mountain Gun style revolver chambered for a cartridge other than .44 magnum was the 1794/1994 Springfield Armory bicentennial commemorative .45ACP, although S&W did not call it a M.G.
