First snow storm

I was in Rock Springs some years ago during a "white-out" and was lead to believe all snow in Wyoming was horizontal.

I do remember Christmas day 2009... fresh powder fell straight down all day for an accumulation of 16". Bing Crosby would have cried. By sunrise on the 26th the wind was a steady 30mph, and we were back to our usual bare spots and drifts.

Well, winter is coming to Montana, woke up to white on the ground and more falling. Be plenty of nice warm days ahead before it is here to stay. Just a reminder that I live in Montana and it snows when it wants too. We get an average of 65" here. I don't know that it has ever snowed in July or August, it did snow 4" in June once and we average 4" in May and Oct and the record was 24" in one late March day.

You warm weather people take heed. If you were a S&W this place would freeze you serial number location off.:D

I live in Maryland and we had a record of 77inches in 2009/10.. I could not imagine 65" in a regular winter.. Wow.. Dig ma'man Dig..

...Donner Pass is the place to be if you like snow...

...The winter of '52 boasts a seemingly endless list of weather superlatives, including the deepest snowpack ever measured near Donner Pass at 26 feet, and the Summit's second greatest annual snowfall on record with 67.7 feet, just five inches shy of the 1938 all-time record...

...I've heard the building code up there requires exterior stairs from the second floor...

We get rain here in the foothills of the Western Cascade range in WA state. If we want snow, we drive 65 minutes to the mountains and ski/snowshoe/hunt.... :)

My "snow blower" is a old Ford diesel 4x4 with a plow mounted on the front. No need Tetris, but it was spitting snow for 3 mornings in a row. But, supposed to be 70s this weekend. Elevation here is only 4000 ft, but surroundings mtns go over 7000, Low lander compared to those over by the Beartooths. I live in the great Judith basin bordered by the Judith, Snowies, Belts, Moccasins, and Highwoods, and backed up by other front fingers ranges of the eastern side of the Continental divide.

2009/10... ah, yes, I remember. 250" and a great summer after.

Then in 2011/12 we got 55" and no spring rains. Wildfires all summer. Streams and springs dried up. Critters had a horrible season. Taught me never to bemoan all the white stuff we can get.

I lived in Akron, Ohio for ten years. Snow that puts Montana to shame on a city road built with slippery bricks out of hilly deer paths and a highway sunk into an old canal bottom with 45 degree ramps that all iced over instantly with every northerly wind. I remember gas pumps freezing in all the stations. My doors freezing in the jambs. Exiting the house from second story windows onto the snow. People who could take it no more and walked out into Lake Eerie until they fell through the ice. The sun disappeared in August and did not come back until May. No more.

I had my life's share of snow and ice, my rule now is to live south of I-10.
