For shooting, that is. He's gonna be 14 in July, and I finally have a chance to take him out to his grandma's farm and shoot something that doesn't have Nerf tips. I bought a nice condition Remington 514 with a scope earlier this year. Single shot .22, nice & light, and a good clean bore & action. It seems to be the perfect beginner's rifle. I'll be darned if I can figure out what's taken me so long. I was shooting .30-30's and 30-06 by his age, but circumstances were a lot different. Anyhow, I don't know who's more excited between the two of us! I never shot this gun since I bought it so of course I get 1st dibs! (For safety reasons, of course.) I'll bring my Marlin 39A along in case this Rem has issues. I don't like the scope but I can take it off & go iron if we need to. I have a plastic saw horse and some silhouette targets. I don't know; maybe 30-40 yards would be okay. I put a card table & a couple chairs in my trunk with the targets; guns & bag of range goodies go in tomorrow. Gonna have him look up the 514 online today to get an idea what he's got. I didn't think about that until just a little while ago. Lots of safety to go over, but he's extremely smart and very computer savvy. Let yinz know how it goes.

Very good plan, even if it is at age 14. Way better than never, or learning from video games! Be sure and take some reactive targets, like wafer cookies, charcoal or something besides just punching holes. Once he gets the basics down, and gets comfortable shooting, reactive targets are exciting, even to us big kids.
Be sure and take pictures, just warn him about posting them online. It's a diff'rt world out there today.

My Granddad taught me to shoot at 7.
I shot his 22 pump he provided 22 Shorts.
I got 5 cents for every Starling and 25 cents for every Groundhog.
That is me and one of my bigger Groundhogs in my Avatar.
Not to brag, but I will anyway. I got really good at getting the Starlings that I could shoot and get 1 out of 3 while flying.
The Starlings ate the Mulberrys from a tree 50 feet from the backdoor of his house and then proceed to **** all over the area around the backdoor which made my Grandmother very unhappy.

Good for you!! Reminds me when I took my oldest grandson out shooting for the first time. I had been a Hunter Safety Instructor for 28 years. Our eldest son, his wife, and our grandson were visiting for the week.
I suggested to my son that we take Blake out to the range and let him shoot my little Henry mini-bolt single-shot .22. My sweet little daughter-in-law, who grew up in a house without any firearms remarked, "But Dad, he's eight years old!"
I replied, "I know, Sweetie, and I apologize. I should've started him three years ago."

Well, Keegan is a natural! After about 3 shots, dead center (maybe 35 yards) he asked to use the iron sights instead of the scope. Off it went and he did just fine. Then, the darned bolt started giving fits and I forgot oil. But I brought out the trusty Marlin 39A and his eyes really lit up! We had a blast!
I also found out he's a siren enthusiast. Yeah, it's a real thing. We stopped at two fire houses to get pics of these old sirens. He rattled off tons of info and manufacturers of firehouse and civil defense sirens and all the model numbers, etc.
He also rattled off something about linear something between two objects that make you think you were there but you weren't but you may have been and dghdfifujfhidoffkjfkoofjj went my brain! Need more one on one time for sure, and I made need to get "normal" first!!
