Flat Tire - Unbelievable What Caused It

Not a flat, but a tire story nonetheless.

Had a truck that kept getting tire-balance problems. I'd get the tires balanced and a few days later the seats would be shaking. One ride would be fine, the next was endless shaking. Long story short, after about ten trips to the Firestone store, the tire guy came out and handed me a tire weight. He said it was inside the tire and was causing the problem. I smiled nicely and told him his store had mounted and balanced the tires initially.
No charge for the balancing.

Returning from vacation I ran over something in WV that went through my tire and wheel. I never found it. I used a driveway marker to show the path in the wheel and tire. You could put a finger through the hole in the alloy wheel.

Going in for new tires this morning on 2005 Tundra 4wd. Am fan of 10 ply tires.

When I lived in PA, the PA Game News had a story about a hunter who had a flat. Stopped at a local garage to get it repaired. Cause was a live .30-30 shell lodged in the tread like a nail, case head outside. No telling how many miles he put on the case head.

We replaced lots and lots of tires and repaired countless punctures on motorcycle and atv tires at the dealership over the years.

One memorable incident occurred with a big knobby rear tire (with 2 rim locks) from an off-road bike.

A fellow brought in just the tire/wheel assembly that wouldn't hold air.

He told me he had just had the tire and tube replaced at a competitor dealership and when it wouldn't hold air, they told him it wasn't their fault.

There was no visible sign of a puncture so the tech broke it down to inspect the interior of the tire and replace the inner tube.

The culprit was a 10mm Craftsman combination wrench left in the tire.

The fun part was the wrench was engraved with the technician's name: Steve XXXXXX. (Name withheld).

The tech was a guy I had recently let go and he had bragged to me that he was working at the competition!

We replaced the tube and I presented the customer with a bill, his punctured inner tube, and the tech's 10mm wrench and I told him to take it back to the other dealer's service department, show them the wrench and tube, and oh by the way, say, "Hi" to Steve for me. :D

Hair Pin turn

Ladies black hair pin. Hair Pin must have
caught the tire trend just right when turning
tightly at the Gas Station.

Next time you fill your vehicle at the Gas
Station, just take a look around at the ground
I bet you’ll find a Hair Pin.

I didn’t know they were still in use! Gas
Station is about the only place I see them.
Of course I pick them up and toss in the
garage can.

Worked a failed 6000 hp electric motor and the seals on the attached 93K gallons/minute pump. The motor thrust bearing failed and the pump shaft wiped the seals. Major, quoted as 6k gpm leak. I happened to be up on the motor when the flywheel was lifted clear and let out a bark of laughter before I cut it off.

Plant managment personnel were down below and demanded to know what I found funny. I was swift enough to ask them to come up a see for themselves. A complete electricians tool kit, with worker ID helpfully engraved was under the flywheel. Kind of explained why there were no instrument indications of problems. Hard to do eletrical hookups without tools. Slew of people fired. We got all the pump & motor work from that utility from then on.

Back in the early 90's I had a 635 BMW with dayton wire wheels on it and it leaked around the spoke holes I put some of that green slime in the one that leaked and I took it to a tire place to have it balanced he spun it and got it done and put the weight on and spun it again and it was off again he tried a couple of times and it never worked, he asked me have you put anything in this tire? It hit me it was the slime. Jeff
