Flying the Flag properly

It's not something I get all "HOA" about. The weather beats them up quickly here, so being faded and tattered is not uncommon. They all seem to get replaced or taken down eventually.

Here is something that happened to my wife back in the late 70's early 80's.
She worked at a company that had a flagpole up front. Her boss asked her to put the flag up.
She had never done that before, so she takes the flag, goes out and puts it on the rope and raises it.
A short time later her father-in-law, my father (a fireman at that time) drives by and sees that the flag was upside down (meaning someone needs help) So he went inside and got my wife and helped her to raise the flag correctly. After work she came home and told me what happened, and we both had a little laugh about it!
I have "fun" as i fly the Grand Union Flag which is rarely recognized and leads to some interesting "discussions" particularly when I tell them that it was the flag flown over the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia. They are usually confused due to the pre1700 Union Jack that is in the top left-hand canton and I'm originally from the UK. Dave_n

OK trivia time, where is the only place the US flag is on display 24/7/365?

Approximately a week after Joe Biden had been sworn into office as POTUS, I had a neighbor stop me and ask if I was protesting Bidens Presidency. I had NO idea what he was talking about and I told him the same. He pointed up to my flag and it was flying upside down!
I was so embarrassed. I am generally not outspoken about my political beliefs as they are private for me, same for religious matters. I would NEVER use the US flag as a form of protest.
I normally fly the flag 24/7 (lighted) but I do take it down when the weather turns to ice/freezing rain and/or winds above 60 mph, to avoid tearing up my flags. I already go through 2-4 a year. Apparently when I put it back up about a week before this incident, I had put it up wrong and just wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. DOH!

No disrespect to those that have accidently flown their flag upside down, but do you not pause and look at the flag, or salute it after you have raised it? I had the opportunity when my sons were young, to be a leader for cub scout group. We learned how to fold the flag, raise and lower, and how to display it. Started out letting the boys fold a large towel, as to not have flag on ground. Then all fold Regular flag. Flag presentation and retire was a regular part of every meeting.

From 1954 to 1957, I was in the Ground Observer Corps. For two of those years, I had the 6 to 9 am watch on Saturdays at our post on a hilltop overlooking the city of San Diego. When the sun came up, it was up to me to raise the flag. On the next hill two miles to the north was the giant Navy radio transmitting station at Chollas Heights. I could hear the bugler playing "Morning Colors" over the station's P.A. system. I prided myself in getting up our post's flag before the Navy got theirs up, but If I somehow forgot, I would always get a reminder from the Navy bugler.

I moved to a senior community for health reasons and always had a flagpole and my flag flies 24/7/365.
What infuriates me the most is the number of veterans here from various conflicts that fly their flags through the night without being illuminated and its tattered condition and when I called a few on it they said flag rules have changed.

I tell you another thing that frosts my fanny. So called patriots driving around with flags on the back of their pickups getting tattered and coated in dirt and exhaust. They obviously never served or they would have learned more respect.
Yes. But what is worse is flag as clothing.

Hundreds of thousands of men and women have died to support my right to fly the flag in any manner I desire . . .
Yes, we served so you would have rights like flying the flag however you please and because of veterans who assured your freedoms you even have the right to burn the flag
THAT HARDLY MEANS THAT WE APPROVE OF EVERYONE'S ACTIONS

I have long maintained that the way to eliminate the burning of the US Flag in protest is to decriminalize the misdemeanor assault of those engaged in said act. Freedom of speech, not freedom from consequences . . .

IMO, our local post office was somewhat lacking in proper flag etiquette and since I get daily mail there at a PO box, I volunteered my services, along with my gkids to occasionally assist. Other than limited illumination from a streetlight, at least now, colors are staffed properly. Also, I don't have link handy, but you can subscribe to get both email and text alerts when Whitehouse declares half-staff orders.

With Memorial Day fast approaching, here is my favorite version of this song...

I, too, fly old glory 24/7, except during excessively high winds. When it starts to become tattered, I retire it. I used to bring it to the VFW, now I do it myself in a private, backyard ceremony. I am with Rusty on this issue.

In warmer weather, such as now, I frequently see younger folk sporting US flag tee-shirts. I perceive that as a show of patriotism.

I am good with that. Even the shorts.

The last decade I have striven to not be labeled as "OK, Boomer!"

So far it has worked.
