If I have a 686 with a forged font sight (-1 to
-4) can it be sent back to smith to be changed in to a pinned sight? Has anyone done this? What does it cost?

It wouldn't be too hard to install a pinned front sight. Mill off the original sight, mill a slot for the new sight, install the sight and drill the pin hole & install the pin.

Especially if you wanted a contrasting color front sight, milling for a dovetail front sight would be faster and easier.

Figure one hour of machine time plus parts, and possibly an hourly charge for the hand work for the pinned sight. Hourly rates will vary by your area, about $70/hr in Virginia.

I had a stainless steel/orange insert milled off, a slot cut, and a serrated patridge sight installed by my local gunsmith on my 629. I supplied the front sight from Brownells, and he did the machine work, including drilling and pinning the front sight.
He charged $75 for it. It looks like a factory installation now. I am well pleased.
