My wife has 4 cats and a ferret inside and one outside cat. They couldn't even find a 14 inch snake on my kitchen floor.:D

Besides SNAKES don't play with their food.

Two years ago this week, one of our cats was playing with something in my wife's office. Turns out it was a little ring-necked snake (NOT that common). She freaked out, as she always does when confronted with our legless neighbors (or the 8-legged ones), but did manage to save it from the cat by putting her coffee cup over it.

Her father came over and rescued her from the Ring-Necked Menace, releasing same in the back yard.

Non-venomous snakes are quite beneficial. Good on you for saving the rat snake - I'm sure it will pay you back, in its way.

Good job... "Give a snake a break", he will serve you well in your back yard.

Beautiful. I think they are some of the most attractive creatures on the earth....except the Anaconda....that is a big ugly snake.

I agree with Amici. Out in CO I had a whole passel of garter snakes under the front porch. They'd always come out to a certain place and sun themselves. I thought they were great. The lady I sold the house to did not share this thought....

He's a handsome one. Beautifully marked. We get similar house guests from time to time. The last reptillian one was an Alligator Lizard wandering around in the living room. I think they're hitching rides hidden in the woodpile when I bring wood in for the fireplace.

I lived in an old farmhouse with a hand-dug basement and a french drain around the perimeter which drained out into the back of the yard toward the creek. Of course, the washer & dryer were down there in the dungeon.

Every now & then I'd find a long snake skin over the washing machine area. We even once had a litter of milk snakes come out from under the chest freezer.

The snakes ate the mice, the mice ate the hairy spiders, and the hairy spiders ate the other bugs.

I just did the laundry quickly and left the whole ecosystem alone.

I've run over a couple snakes with the lawn mower. Always felt bad about it. Then again, they weren't in the house! I'd still rather see that than this.....
