My wife and I are starting to build a house on 1-1/2 acres in Oklahoma City and I am wondering about buying a weed sprayer that would sit on the rear rack of my Suzuki 250 four wheeler. Once the lawn is all sodded it will be irrigated with a sprinkler system and I don't care about having it look like a putting green, I just want the lawn fairly green and fairly weed free. Years ago I had a 1-1/2 acre lawn and I used a pull-behind sprayer with 4' booms on each side and that worked pretty well but my Craftsman mower was a LOT slower than my four wheeler. Also I see many sprayers now don't have the booms they just spray a big fan of chemicals out each side and I thought that would make going around trees a lot easier but wondered how well it worked on a windy day?

... but wondered how well it worked on a windy day?

None of them will work on a windy day without spreading the chemical places where you do not want it. I'd opt for a calm day. And that might be tough in OK.

Most of the hardware store variety sprayers put out a really fine mist. Bad on even a calm day. The nozzles are usually changeable, however, and one should use a nozzle(s) that puts out slightly larger drops so they are not blown around as much.

Be extra careful around most flowers, both annual and perennial. Any broadleaf herbicide (Weed No More, Weed Be gone, etc.) will kill a whole bunch of flowers right along with the dandelions.

I took a dolly like u move things with--welded a battery tray on the front --bought a sprayer at tractor supply--added a few 2x6s for a frame & put on solid tires & laid it down flat. I pull it with my mower because u have more control of the speed than a 4 wheeler. I had mine on the 4 wheeler but the wife had trouble stopping & going. Now I can load bullets while she sprays the weeds. Will post a photo tonight if things go ok. U cant spray on a windy day.:D If 1 1/2 acre is all I had to worry about any more at my age I would get a small miniature horse. Screw the lawnmower & the gas. OK--This one does the fence line & spot spraying--Have another like it that sprays 8 feet-- perfect for a few acres. --Low upkeep. U cant get MSMA anymore but there are replacements that wont hurt the grass & kill weeds.

I think you'll want the 10 or 15 gallon sprayer. The 25 gallon one will be too much for that 250 cc 4 wheeler. Be especially careful with 2-4D weed killer. with even a slight breeze you'll kill yours and your neighbor's fruit tees and ornamentals. With liquid fertilizer, who cares if some gets blown to the wrong places.

Look at these. Depends on you exact needs. You want to hold a spay wand or do you want a small boom?

Broadcast + Spot Sprayers | Garden Sprayers + Lawn Sprayers | Sprayers | Northern Tool + Equipment

Depends on the type of turf and weeds. Some weed killers are pre emergent others post emergent.

24-D was mention. It is a post emergent so you have to direct srpy the weed. Something like Atrazine if you can find it or use it is a pre so the whole area needs to be covered..

Different Turf different chemicals. I can only help with Southern Grasses.

And for what it's worth...when yer spraying liquids, put a dab of liquid dish soap in with....It helps the liquid stick to the leaves, doesn't wash away quite so fast, till it has time do it's job.

My 2 wheel 25 gal with the booms works for me, behind my rider.
