I think it is considered a pistol with an attachable stock.I'm not sure on the rules since its pre 1899.

The Frank Wesson is probably a model 1870, made prior to 1898. As an antique, it is legal per BATF. Your state laws, however, may vary. The price is reasonable for an 80% or better gun. If you intend to shoot it, ask before buying about the condition of the bore, as many of the black powder era 22's have little rifling remaining.

For $850, it should be in very good original condition. Frank Wesson guns in good condition with shoulder stocks, are uncommon but not rare. They came in various calibers, and .22RF ( note: Rim Fire, not long rifle) is probably the most common. Are you sure the gun is in .22 Long Rifle? (That caliber wasn't invented in 1870) Ed.
