Welcome loony888 from the oceany evergreen side of WA state. Beautiful place which sadly lately becomes more and more like Australia in regard to firearms restrictions.

Why cannot you get the new Colt Python there? Not imported in Australia or banned for a particular reason other than caliber?

Good luck to you and your wife getting those licenses and finding what you want!

Pretty sure we can get the Colt Python here, there are limitations on Handguns, i'm in Queensland so i'm not sure what other states allow but here .38 is the max without a class C amendment to the license, which we will both apply for.
Other stuff is 10 round capacity, 5" barrel for an auto and 4" for a revolver as a minimum, so in the grand scheme of things it's not too bad, but we certainly don't get to choose from the variety that's available especially in the U.S and no one here is allowed to carry unless their job requires it, even our uniformed Police leave their weapons at work i believe.
 
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome, I'm definitely educating myself on what's what on this forum, and others, we can shoot without a license at a range with the range officer supervising until we get our license sorted so we're getting to try out all sorts of different guns, My Champagne taste on a beer budget is always getting me into trouble though so who knows what we will end up with.... LOL

Thanks for explaining! Did not know these. Too bad Colt couldn't do a series of the new Python in .38 Special chambering for markets that have restrictions on .357 Magnum (think Mexico is also there). At least the new Python comes in both 4.25" and 6" barrel lengths to pass that one for you there (4.25" was also probably for Canadian market, before handguns were banned there if I got that correctly).

Might have led you astray there, they dictate maximum caliber here purely on size, not power so .38 means i can also have .357 Magnum without a special amendment on my license like Class C which i would need for 45ACP.

If it's an auto it must have a 5" barrel or a certain overall length if the barrel is less, if it's a revolver a 4" barrel is fine but again, if the barrel is less than 4" the gun needs to be a minimum overall length.
Then! you can have almost anything if you're a "collector" but we haven't looked into that rabbit hole yet.....

Someone advised me, (not sure where i picked this up) as a new shooter to make sure i buy a new gun rather than a second hand one as i will likely have no idea what i'm looking at and may unwittingly buy a dog that has been modified by a kitchen table gunsmith, interesting term that. Which i wouldn't want to be a victim of, especially as they are very difficult to buy and sell and quite expensive as well.....

It's not _too_ bad, they like to drag the license process out to discourage gun ownership. with no gun license, if you want a hand gun license you have to apply for a permit to join a gun club, that takes a couple of months to get back....
Then you join the gun club, then you have to complete a minimum of three competition shoots in a 6 month period, then you can apply for a license. maybe 4 month wait....
Then, if you want to own your own gun, you need a "permit to acquire" only then can you go buy one only gun, restricted to .38 so .357 Magnum and 9mm are ok, so is 38 super, but max capacity is 10 rounds in a magazine.
You can buy a second gun after a further 12 months from your first purchase.
you must shoot each gun in a competition shoot at least twice per year i believe as well. and store them in an approved safe, unloaded, ammo stored safely elsewhere.
 
Well, there has been progress.....

We submitted our applications to join a pistol club on april 10, supposed to have them back in 30 days.... yesterday, July 7 i receive an e-mail.

OMG! because i was born in a different country to Australia, I have to sign a stat dec declaring any criminal history or medical condition that may preclude me from getting a license, even though they KNOW DAMN WELL i came here when i was 5 ******* years old......

Sure, you can get a gun license here, but they definitely don't want you to have one, and they like to drag out the process as much as they can, still waiting for that approval to join a pistol club, then it's 6 months before we can apply for a license, **** knows how long it will take for that to be sorted, i've been told it's over a year for the process, looks about right.

So, if you live in a more liberal society where gun ownership is easier, be thankful !!! LOL
