That is why you want to have a map in your car. I try not to be a Luddite, but I don't care for those darn gps things.

The internal battery may have run down. I found that if you do not use them for a while, you need to recharge the battery even though you are running off a power source like the cigarette lighter. I had a similar problem. Recharged the thing until it said it was fully charged, then it ran just fine.

Hope that this was your problem, as it is easy to remedy.

Contact Garmin customer service and see what they say.

Many cell phones can optionally provide GPS mapping/services, and turn by turn directions can be printed out free from a number of online services in advance.

Mine did the same thing and it was the battery. Also, the company informed me that some model cars will still drain the energy off the gps even though you think it is cut off if it is still pluged in to the accessery outlet. They suggested that recharging the battery thru your usb port on your computer was the best way to do it. You can download the info off the company web site on how to do it.

Yikes. My girlfriend owns a Garmin Nuvi. No problems have been had with it yet. Luckily she doesn't travel far by herself.. if she does I'm usually with her.

The bright light in the sky early in the day following darkness, will happen in the east.
Where the light diminishes at the end of the day, will be in the west.
We're near the summer solstice, so the area of the sky the sun's traversing from east to west across, is north.
South? (see above descriptions)
At night North star will indicate north, if she's still in the northern hemisphere?
If cloudy, moss grows on the north side of tree's and homeless bum's.
If her glasses are dirty, "that smell" will instantly indicate where New Jersey is.

Couldn't have said it better myself. This is particulary helpful in the Gulf of Mexico for if you travel North you will eventually get home. (Unless you're going to Tampa or Corpus Christi in which case you should travel East or West respectivly-Do NOT reverse these directions or iou will travel a lot longer and will not be at where you want to be when you get there).

That's why I never go anywhere without my trusty astrolabe.

I agree this is probably a dead battery situation.

The battery may have completely failed, or it may just be that someone unplugged the GPS in order to plug in an i-Pod or other device and forgot to plug it back in again.

Or the poweroutlet has died. Maybe a fried fuse that supplies it, or in our case a few times the plug wasn't making good contact with the socket. Needed to be pushed down and twisted a little.

I don't trust Garmin. I suspected that sexy-voiced lady of trying to lure me off into the wilds of Southwest Georgia or Southeast Alabama so some of her cohorts could ambush me and steal my car and belongings. This was on a trip from Middle Georgia to Destin, Florida. It seemed the later it got, the narrower the roads and more desolate the route she selected for me.

i like my map and compass

i have heard reports of gps telling people to drive places
where the road, if it can be called that, was suspect

besides, i have bad battery karma....when i need it most, i can usually
count for some battery somewhere in the gizmo to fail....

i guess i am old fashioned.......

I've been in cars with them and I like when I know a better shortcut and freak out the talking GPS.

When was the last time that it was plugged into the computer for an update? TomTom's have to be plugged in every once in a while or they will shut down. I am sure that Garmin's are the same way. They need to have their software updated.

Most GPS units don't recognize the difference between a paved road and a seasonal fire road. If it's named and on a map, it's fair game. Heck - sometimes even if it isn't named anymore. Abandoned roads aren't always removed from the database. :-(

Got a call from a lady one night who was driving her full-ton dualie pickup with a multi-horse trailer, got stuck ... on a seasonal road in midwinter. She saw the warning signs but figured the GPS knew what it was doing. *sigh*

I have a TomTom and I love it - it makes a lot of navigation a lot easier, although I usually just turn the voice off. I also print off directions from online before I go somewhere I'm not familiar with, and if I'm going across state lines, I swing by AAA and get the current road maps too.

Technology can fail... pretty hard for the battery to die on a sheet of paper, though. :-D

Did you folks notice the banner adds. Mine on this thread are all for GPS units. Creepy man.

Just too funny!:) We hardly use a map. There is usually enough signs to find your way.
