Would someone be kind enough to post pictures of the different types of gas rings (yoke mounted vs cylinder mounted)? I believe pictures would shine some light on this subject. At least, for me.

Here's one I made:

One last question

Was the yoke type gas ring a separate part (pressed on) or was it part of the yoke itself (machined as a single unit)? Once again, many thanks.

If the gas-ring on the yoke of my 19-3 and 640 no-dash is a separate part, it's on there pretty good; I don't see any way to get it off, and I think it was actually part of the yoke itself.

On N-frames, it seems the gas ring has always been on the cylinder and was a separate part, even. For K-frames, I think the transition to cylinder gas-rings was in 1977, and was part of the cylinder/machined in. Interestingly, the two J-frames I've had both had their gas rings on the yoke, even though one was made between 1990-1996 (a 640 no-dash) and the other was made in 2006 or 2007 (a 642-2, with the internal lock and MIM parts).
