My neighbor has a Glock 39 (subcompact .45GAP) and he would like for me to take it off his hands! (For a considerably high price!)
He is aware of the fact that I am about to purchase a Shield 45 and thinks the Glock is better chose for me. (His logic). I can get the Shield for a very good price at my LGS along with the $75. rebate. He is willing to take $375. for the Glock. He claims the Glock is a better gun and a better value. I, however don't think so!
Anyone familiar with the Glock.45GAP? What are your thoughts?

Yes it's Glocks way of making a 45acp fit a 9mm frame.

It's really quite pointless unless you love the gun and the round. Not many places use them and ammo is expensive. The guns themselves aren't bad but I wouldn't be paying $25 a box of FMJ

Oddly enough used ones never sit long at my LGS. Someone's buying them

IMO, a glock is a glock. Take that however you want. I like them while some don't.
As for the .45GAP, other than having your name (glock) associated with the round and/or having .45ACP ballistics in a 9mm length magazine, I don't see the need. Just my opinion.
ETA:
Ammo availability may also be a problem.

Buy the Glock 39 if you are going to carry it for protection. You will love it in no time. If you are buying for both CCW and range time...I'd still buy the Glock..:)

I'll agree if we are talking about a Glock 30!

The Gawd Awful Pistol versions are to be avoided. Most police depts. that went to them have already switched.

Gaston wanted something with his name on it. Notice how the 45 ACP, 357 SIG & 40 S&W are marked on Glocks - 45 AUTO, 357 AUTO & 40 AUTO.

To the OP - skip the GAP - get whatever pistol makes you happy in a more readily available round.

For the record, I carry a G30 or a G43 daily. (sometimes both ;) )

The only .45 Glocks worth having are the Glock 21 (fullsize 13 rd mag) and the Glock 30 (compact 10 rd mag). Both are chambered for the .45 ACP, which has the overiding and sterling virtue of being AVAILABLE.

I visit half a dozen local gun shops every week. I only know of ONE that carries .45 GAP, and in FMJ (range ammo spec) costs as much as serious duty JHP. They have it only randomly (I notice because they put a special sign on it to warn off confusion).

If you like the round that much, I can pass along the shop info.

I would think that the Shield is going to have an easier resale??

Actually it was an answer to departments wanting the G21 but with the grip of a G17.

The police depts. didn't do the name game - That was all Gaston. :)

I understand them wanting a smaller grip, but with the new HP rounds available today, all of the popular calibers are all on even footing.

There is no magic bullet. No matter what, you need accuracy with a bullet that does what it is designed to do - the best 9mm-45ACP ammo all do that.

The trend now is to go away from the 40 S&W back to the 9mm since the 9mm is easier to shoot for most folks. Add to that the capacity of the 9mm, and it's easy to see why police depts. are doing what they are doing.

The GAP ammo was a interesting concept - but better ammo for the main stream calibers came along and made it irrelevant.

If I could find a G39 in good condition for $375, I'd get it. I'd get it with the understanding that I'd have to handload for it. Starline charges $3 more for GAP brass in 500 count. Needless to say the other component prices are the same. It's a unique pistol in an unusual caliber - and that's why I have Ruger P89 and a Walther P5 in .30 Luger/9mil. Any schmuck can go out and buy a Shield ... ;)

Have a Glock 37. Deadly accurate, easy to shoot, same size as a G19 or G17 (9MM). Really just never caught on. Mine is a GA State Patrol turn in. If you hand load ammo, no difference in component cost and 45 GAP can be loaded to approach 45 ACP without difficulty.

If it were a Glock 36 (.45 ACP) I'd say go for it. If the choice is between a Shield .45 ACP and a .45 GAP anything, take the Shield. You won't pay much more for the Shield than he's asking for that 39.

The .45 GAP is just about the only thing that Glock has ever failed at.

.45 GAP,.....no thanks. I've seen ammo on the shelves twice since the cartridge and gun were introduced, but .45 ACP is always on the shelves. Around here, .45 GAP is rare, indeed.........

I like the GAP myself (have 2 G37s and 4K once-fired cases) but I am a little strange. :) While I would love to have a G39, I would only do so if it was a great deal (i.e. $300 or less). For the money, you can't beat the Shield deals.
