Get that colonoscopy!

My prep day wasn't that bad, they had me mix a whole bottle of Mirilax into a two liter bottle of Gatorade and drink it all. It was just like pissing through the other orifice. Not at all like the crampy ****z you get with the flu or eating something bad....And with modern twilight IV's, you don't remember anything. But man, afterwards, I was HUNGRY.

I would add, if you're adopted get it done sooner. I tried to get one at 40, but my doc said I couldn't, because I didn't have a family history. I told him, "I'm adopted, how do you know I don't have a family history?" I found another doc and got one done at 45. Same thing if your parents died early, like in their 30's or 40's, of a heart attack or car crash. How do you know they wouldn't have developed colon cancer at 45 or 50?

I did the Mirilax and Gatorade thing too, drank the whole thing in no time. Seriously, it was a much improved version of the stuff I drank on the previous procedure, which was a mixture of turpentine, floor wax and anti-freeze.:D

No! The new ones are much better...... I know!

Can you guys more accurately pinpoint when these hideous, disgusting poisons started to get so much tastier and better. I am always hearing how preps are getting so much better and easier to tolerate. :) Well, you sure as heck can't prove it by me. :D I say they were super-disgusting before and they are still super-disgusting today. :p

But I am willing to learn. ;) Maybe it is just me that can't sense any improvement at all. :o

I'll have to say from what I've heard from others, the methods used vary by the doctor, as some still complain about the "cocktail".
I'd find a doc that wants her/his patients to use Mirilax or similar. Personally, having done Mirilax/Gatorade thing before, there's no way I'm going back to drinking the cocktail.

We lost a good friend who was also a shooter and hunter. He was a medical doctor in his late 40s and got treatment ASAP when he noticed symptoms. Too late...already stage 4 and had spread from colon to his liver. He stayed alive another 2 years(I think for his wife and kids) but he took a bad turn in March and went fast.

I'm past due for my next scope job.

Thanks for mentioning this, I lost my best friend, who happened to be my brother in law to colon cancer.

It's very preventable with this simple test.

My dad had an intestinal blockage...Let it go and let it go...(STUBBORN).. had a bad tumor and 13'' of colon removed....12 months later , it was all over his guts..liver, spleen, bladder, ad nauseum...He refused treatment went home to die in his bed as he wished...6 weeks later...I'm due for my 3rd scope job next year.....
Better to be safe than sorry....
JIM...................

there is one regimen that involves taking pills, with some fluids. The insurance companies demand a steeper co-pay for them tho..to me it was worth it.

I get a PSA test every 6 months, they are cheap to have done and well worth it.

But I'm not a candidate for a colonoscope. Been told it would be unlikely they could perform it on me. I had spinal surgery where they cut from the front and basically removed my inards to get to my 2 blown disc's and other damage from a work place accident. That happened in 2001. In 1978 I had exploratory surgery that ended up removing scar tissue that had grown from my appendix scar to wrap around my colon. My appendix had been removed when I was 8, 20 years before.

Because of the scar tissue I was told odds were less then 50% of it being successfully done. That worries me greatly and why I have had a PSA test done every 6 months since my early 50's. My numbers are low and have stayed the same over these past years.

But have a BIL with colon problems so yes do get tested if all possible and if it runs genetically in your family genes do so at a early age ! All it can do is save your life !

Prepping for it is the worst part. You're kind of like an upside-down volcano for a couple of days.
Another tip, try to shut up when they're putting you under. It will be difficult, but try. You will say some stupid goofy things while under the effects of the drugs.
I was told I was telling jokes for a short while. Probably messed the punch lines up, too.
Embarrassing!

Some years ago my doctor found blood in stool during my annual physical which I was unaware of and suggested I get a scope as I was 50 then too. They found some polyps and a large mass they removed and sent in to be tested. Turned out benign but sure scared me. I went in for them pretty regular after that until my last one they said I was good for 5 years.
The newer preps are better but still not a fun time. It's not a lot of fun to go through plus the fasting but something that needs to be done.

5 year do over.

Had my 3rd 'scope two weeks ago. Was my 5 year follow up. Found benign polyps in 2010 and removed them.

NOTHING THIS TIME!

Next visit in 5 years.

BTW, the prep this time was 8 ounces of some solution with water then 2 more big glasses of water in the next hour. That was not bad at all. Damn near had to hold a gun to my own head to down the same stuff at 0500 the next morning. Yikes!

Anesthesia was Propofol. Great...works instantly, it seemed. Watched the NA push the syringe and that was it. Woke up with zero side effects.

Get it done, boys and girls!

Be safe.

Inability to get insurance kept me from getting one until last year. The doc took one polyp, which turned out to be benign. Next visit 10 years. I don't know what the anaesthetic was, but I was awake through a lot of it, and could see the video. Nurse said I slept through about half.

Best part was she encouraged me to fart; my wife could take a page from her book.

Oh, and one other thing....
I believe I speak for all, this is one of those threads where not sharing pics is just fine.

I need to add that although I've been joking with this, Ladder13 is right.
It's a lifesaver and serious business.
It reminds me that I'm a year or two belated getting my next one and I really need to correct that.
It's too easy to put off till later, and that could prove to be fatal.
