Getting vibed at the Range.

Why can't folks jest try to get along..........

One time a couple of fine English gentlemen and their wives were out for a bit of sport shooting.

While walkin up a few birds on the grounds of the estate, one bird flushed near one of the ladies....
The younger man took the shot and downed the bird in grand style.

The older gentleman spoke up, "I say there ol boy you nearly shot my wife!"

He replies, "Sorry there ol chap."...Taking a few steps back, he adds, "Here, have a go at mine!"

You coulda' said "yeah but your the only one here who's *** I'm gonna' kick if you don't get the **** away from me."

Or something along those lines.

The feller was a jerk but a response like this would only have escalated the situation.

Yes, there is no substitute for Safety. At the same time it's not what you say, it's how you say it. A complaint I have often seen made against gun owners-even within the gun owner/RKBA community-is that the image of shooters is all too often old guys with attitudes. If he spoke to you in a very rude fashion he wasn't a gentleman. And in my younger days I encountered hostility from old geezers, now that I am 64 and a Junior Old Geezer I make a point of being friendly and helpful to younger shooters, especially when it comes to safety and proper gun handling.

Perhaps he did. After all, you're going to make sure you never sweep anyone at the range again, right?

I don't agree with this notion that you were owed some kind of explanation and/or instruction. The guy who straightened you out was likely just another guy who was there to shoot his gun, not offer free amateur gun-handling classes.

So what range were you at? I shoot at The Firing Line, and there are times when I'm not comfortable with the people around me, so I pack up.

Lot's of new gun owners out there, with a lot of inexperience handling weapons. Not saying this includes you, just sayin'...

Side note: I took a CCW course in 2001, where there was an individual that had zero gun handling skills. My buddy and I walked over to the lead instructor and asked if they could 'keep an eye' on him. He replied "I've got him covered'. They ended up escorting him off the range before the end of class, because of unsafe gun handling.

Range Rant: I can tolerate two people shooting on the same line, either sharing a weapon or using their own, but three or four? No. Recipe for disaster, IMHO.

I would have kindly ask him in detail what I did wrong. Might be (or not) it could ring a bell. I hate paid ranges but you got to do what works in your local. I am lucky and have a free county range here and when I choose to go there are few there.
I took a actor you all would know shooting years ago. He was young and hadnt shot before I soon found out. He turned around and had a .22 rifle I had furnished stuck a few feet from my gut. I didnt have to yell at him, I think my pal might have been his uncle or friend that brought him to my house. He chewed his butt good. We still had a good time after that.

I try to be hyper-sensitive to my weaponry at a range as a general courtesy. But I've still screwed up. It happens.

Our state park ranges....

Our ranges are unsupervised. (Man would I love a place like the one in AZ). Anyway, ya'll don't come here, you wouldn't like it and I don't like it myself. There is at least one idiot in every crowd.

All emotions aside, I have to police myself VERY carefully to make sure I follow good rules even if they aren't enforced. Thanks for the video.....good reminders there.

3 story building. guns are on the second floor, 300 people all around me, below me and above me!. No safe direction to point the weapon. So while checking it out at the counter, I pointed it at my own chest.......and the 2nd chance level 3 kevlar I was wearing, and infront of that.... a steel trauma plate. lol

Yep safest muzzle direction I could think of, but some smart head decided to go on a rant about how "unsafe I was"..........right lol. I laughed......then watched him check out a AK that he promptly pointed at the floor..and said "this is the way you should do it kid". Childrens clothing is directly blow the gun counter on the first floor *eyeroll*. Yep. Some people are dumb lol

I don't agree with your disagreement. He offered his criticism without charge. How much more would it have cost him to say, "Look, when you are getting your firearm out of the case......"

If he were truly interested in safety, the guy should take about 10 seconds of his valuable time and explain himself rather than just crab at somebody w/o them knowing what it was they did.

It was his right to crab, but he should have crabbed constructively.

I agree that lives are at stake, but there's more at stake as well; the future of gun enthusiasm.

By all means be stern and straight forward and correct the situation right off. But, take the time to explain what they did wrong, calmly.

IMO it’s not so much that I’m owed free instruction as is it is that if you make an accusation against me then you need to present your evidence. Don’t just tell me I screwed up and walk away and expect me to take anything you said to heart. Especially don’t just go off on me and then walk away and expect me to listen to word you have to say.

SAFE GUN HANDLING

This time of year I won't go near my club on weekends, even though it will have at least 6 ro's and run strictly. Too many open to the public newbies & it is just not safe. You were correct to keep the muzzle pointed up, but WRONG to handle & uncase a gun AT ALL while standing behind other shooters. It's simply bad/unsafe gun etiquette and against the rules in many/most ranges. Case & uncase them up on the bench with the muzzle pointed downrange (as pointed out so well previously), lesson learned. you are not the first, nor last one to do it and HE could have schooled you better. Don't take it too personally.
