Yep. Before I retired I worked nights and had days off in the middle of the week. Many times I went to the range and had the place to myself. I still practiced safe firearms handing even though no one was there to watch me. It's a good habit to practice.

Raccoon Hunters Club out in Romulus.
As a new shooter and cpl holder, I THOUGHT I got the safety rules down, and definitely knew what I felt comfortable with. The 'Coon hunters club was where I figured out what everyone else was comfortable with.
Shooting idpa out there helped with my confidence and shooting, and also taught me how to tolerate the loudmouths (there's always one).

This is the bottom line. Years ago I saw a young soldier killed by a careless act on a range. It will not happen again if I can prevent it. If your feelings (OP) get hurt, sorry 'bout that.

You are convinced you are in the right... but even if you were not... Sorry bud, I didn't think I had. And then enjoy your time at the range. What else is there to do other than make sure you don't allow it to happen in the future?
What some total stranger thinks, says, or how he says it means nothing other than what you make of it. You were not aware of his human existence before that moment, and if he died today you would never know the difference. Let a stranger ruin your day because of his tone? C'mon... this is the type of thing that grade school girls fret over.

Ill tell you of the worst range behavior I ever witnessed. This was back about 1990, and I caught two kids probably only 20-21?/ who were placing live rounds on the range areas where you use to steady a rifle and such--and were placing their rifle right next to the cartridge and firing a shot at it. I overheard one saying how funny the sound was but didnt realize how dangerous it was to do that and the damned thing ricocheted the live cartridge back at them on that last show. I ran them off when I saw that and notified the Deputy who happened to be arriving because apparently those two were doing something they werent supposed to be doing. The Deputy asked me if I knew who they were and they were just getting into their jeep about to drive away. Needless to say, their Carbine was confiscated as well as any ammo, and lucky they were not taken to jail. It turned out the Deputy knew their fathers--one who was a fellow Deputy at the same office. He gave them a dressing down and said he would be contacting their fathers. I never saw those two at the range again.

One thing I try to remember and abide by (not always successful of course, but I try) is: You can't control what other people do or say, but you can control your reaction to it.

Since the guy didn't bother to teach you the proper way to handle the rifle how are you supposed to know what's right?
Different ranges have different rules. Some will only let you take a weapon to your lane/bench if it is in a case. If that is the rule mark the outside of your case so you always know which way the muzzle is pointing. Uncase it only when you know the muzzle is pointing down range.
The range I hope to use now requires guns to be uncased at your car and they must have an empty chamber indicator in place to show everyone that it is empty.
I say I "hope" to use this range because it has been closed indefinately all summer because a guy accidently shot himself in the leg and the safety rules are being re-written. As much of a jerk the guy was being he thought he was doing the right thing and safety rules exist for a reason.

I rarely go to ranges or gun shops anymore and generally hunt alone.I can't tell you how many times Ive been swept by people who should know better and I really don't like what It does to my blood pressure.I figure if some one is oblivious enough to do that,the gun could also be loaded and they've got their finger in the guard.Ive seen several NDs and I don't want one heading towards me.

One time a couple of fine English gentlemen and their wives were out for a bit of sport shooting.
While walkin up a few birds on the grounds of the estate, one bird flushed near one of the ladies....
The younger man took the shot and downed the bird in grand style.
The older gentleman spoke up, "I say there ol boy you nearly shot my wife!"
He replies, "Sorry there ol chap."...Taking a few steps back, he adds, "Here, have a go at mine!"
Good manners never go out of style......

Yes, there is no substitute for Safety. At the same time it's not what you say, it's how you say it. A complaint I have often seen made against gun owners-even within the gun owner/RKBA community-is that the image of shooters is all too often old guys with attitudes. If he spoke to you in a very rude fashion he wasn't a gentleman. And in my younger days I encountered hostility from old geezers, now that I am 64 and a Junior Old Geezer I make a point of being friendly and helpful to younger shooters, especially when it comes to safety and proper gun handling.

You said it. Not taking guff is not the same as a first response of threatening to kick someone's butt for perceived disrespect, to my way of thinking.
Perhaps he did. After all, you're going to make sure you never sweep anyone at the range again, right?
I don't agree with this notion that you were owed some kind of explanation and/or instruction. The guy who straightened you out was likely just another guy who was there to shoot his gun, not offer free amateur gun-handling classes.
You got yelled at, big deal. Man up and move on.

So what range were you at? I shoot at The Firing Line, and there are times when I'm not comfortable with the people around me, so I pack up.
Lot's of new gun owners out there, with a lot of inexperience handling weapons. Not saying this includes you, just sayin'...
Side note: I took a CCW course in 2001, where there was an individual that had zero gun handling skills. My buddy and I walked over to the lead instructor and asked if they could 'keep an eye' on him. He replied "I've got him covered'. They ended up escorting him off the range before the end of class, because of unsafe gun handling.
Range Rant: I can tolerate two people shooting on the same line, either sharing a weapon or using their own, but three or four? No. Recipe for disaster, IMHO.

I would have kindly ask him in detail what I did wrong. Might be (or not) it could ring a bell. I hate paid ranges but you got to do what works in your local. I am lucky and have a free county range here and when I choose to go there are few there.
I took a actor you all would know shooting years ago. He was young and hadnt shot before I soon found out. He turned around and had a .22 rifle I had furnished stuck a few feet from my gut. I didnt have to yell at him, I think my pal might have been his uncle or friend that brought him to my house. He chewed his butt good. We still had a good time after that.

I try to be hyper-sensitive to my weaponry at a range as a general courtesy. But I've still screwed up. It happens.

Our ranges are unsupervised. (Man would I love a place like the one in AZ). Anyway, ya'll don't come here, you wouldn't like it and I don't like it myself. There is at least one idiot in every crowd.
All emotions aside, I have to police myself VERY carefully to make sure I follow good rules even if they aren't enforced. Thanks for the video.....good reminders there.

I've been accused at my LGS of "muzzling" myself! haha
That was a good one!
3 story building. guns are on the second floor, 300 people all around me, below me and above me!. No safe direction to point the weapon. So while checking it out at the counter, I pointed it at my own chest.......and the 2nd chance level 3 kevlar I was wearing, and infront of that.... a steel trauma plate. lol
Yep safest muzzle direction I could think of, but some smart head decided to go on a rant about how "unsafe I was"..........right lol. I laughed......then watched him check out a AK that he promptly pointed at the floor..and said "this is the way you should do it kid". Childrens clothing is directly blow the gun counter on the first floor *eyeroll*. Yep. Some people are dumb lol

If he were truly interested in safety, the guy should take about 10 seconds of his valuable time and explain himself rather than just crab at somebody w/o them knowing what it was they did.
It was his right to crab, but he should have crabbed constructively.

I agree that lives are at stake, but there's more at stake as well; the future of gun enthusiasm.
By all means be stern and straight forward and correct the situation right off. But, take the time to explain what they did wrong, calmly.
The jackwagon probably thought he got "muzzled" by your
AR while it was still in the case.
Sounds like an arrogant Jerk who needed to be put in his place.
Don't let this type of loudmouth ruin your good time at the range.
Just be conscience of your weapons when uncased and you'll be
fine. Like previously stated, there's always one numb groined

IMO it's not so much that I'm owed free instruction as is it is that if you make an accusation against me then you need to present your evidence. Don't just tell me I screwed up and walk away and expect me to take anything you said to heart. Especially don't just go off on me and then walk away and expect me to listen to word you have to say.

This time of year I won't go near my club on weekends, even though it will have at least 6 ro's and run strictly. Too many open to the public newbies & it is just not safe. You were correct to keep the muzzle pointed up, but WRONG to handle & uncase a gun AT ALL while standing behind other shooters. It's simply bad/unsafe gun etiquette and against the rules in many/most ranges. Case & uncase them up on the bench with the muzzle pointed downrange (as pointed out so well previously), lesson learned. you are not the first, nor last one to do it and HE could have schooled you better. Don't take it too personally.
