Good luck, I AM DONE with it!

Can I ask how you tightened the barrel nut?
For the gas tube to line up doesn't that dictate the tightness, or can you add a shim?

Quote Bassaro: "shots just a inch to the bullseye, adjusted the scope, next shot right in the red! The following shot wasn't even on the paper followed by two more shots in the bullseye followed by another shot not even on the paper!"
I've experienced this with my MP10. One set of 5 shots drills the target - same next same 5 handload is like a shot gun (even though fps within 30fps of each other). It is like the point of aim or barrel harmonic goes off. I'm hoping a free float fixes it.

Well...mine already is free floated with a midwest industries something or other.

I really just wish someone would make a quality aftermarket barrel for this gun. I have a very nice setup with too much invested into the gun to walk away and just by a stock Ruger or DPMS. I've built enough ARs to know that I need a new barrel to improve accuracy on this one

I would agree with this. An aftermarket barrel could solve lots of issues. 14.5, 16 and 18's.

Long story short, I have seen no shims for these. I had to run my nut up really tight, as a normal snug at 30-40 range put the tit right in the middle.

What Bassero is describing is kinda what mine does, hit, then high, hit then low.

I wish I knew what was soo special about these. I think it was here I read the DPMS and Smith bolts were different in the teeth and lockup, as compared to DPMS. Not sure about the bolt carrier?

I wish someone would figure something out, short of a custom barrel, as all this just elevates my frustration and it seems I am not the only one!

I'm not a gunsmith...but...

Could you replace the BOLT and the Barrel with DPMS - just keep the receiver?

If only it were that simple? I am not exactly sure. I seem to recall one of the members here did some comparisons at one point.

I would still like to know just what yours will do with M80 or factory ammo?

Just got back from the range. Had to get the bolt guns to my liking for opening day tomorrow for buck season here in the great state of PA. Figured I'd take the ol m&p 10 with me after this thread stirred up so old memories with me. I was shooting of my lead sled and not coming anywhere near pushing this gun distance wise ( just 50 yards for fun). 3 shots just a inch to the bullseye, adjusted the scope, next shot right in the red! The following shot wasn't even on the paper followed by two more shots in the bullseye followed by another shot not even on the paper! I only adjusted my scope once in the beginning.

Thoughts???

Yours may be too good and hits the same hole!

I saw that side by side comparison of the M&P10, DPMS and maybe Armalite nearly a year ago but I can't find it anymore. Anyway, judging by that I'm pretty sure the bolt alone will not fit in either carrier and vice versa. You might have better luck trying a full DPMS BCG and barrel.

FWIW Matrix Aerospace makes the receivers for the Ruger SR10 and it's Armalite pattern. A guy was selling builds with those receivers on Gunbroker and he said you could use either a complete DPMS BCG AND barrel OR an Armalite set in those receivers as long as you don't mix them. It may be the same in the M&P10 receivers.

I have been wanting to try a DPMS BCG and barrel but don't want to spend the cash and it not work. If I had the length measurement of the BCG and extension to compare with mine I could be sure if it would work or not.

Oh well. Maybe I will try it IF mine ever wears out or quits shooting SUB MOA! LOL

I haven't had the pleasure of shooting an M10 or a DPMS in .308 so, I probably don't know what I am talking about. When I have seen this issue with other rifles, the problem is traced back to the crown at the muzzle.

Just a thought but, I sure someone with more experience with this platform knows something that I don't.

Good luck!

I have heard of a damaged crown on a muzzle being an issue too. I'm not sure of that is applicable with a rifle with a flash suppressor. I'm not going to say it's impossible, just not sure how it could happen with one installed.

Anything could still accidentally hit the crown inside the flash suppressor since it just shrouds the muzzle and doesn't really cover the crown. The easiest way I can think of damaging the crown is with a cleaning tool.

Interesting reading... my M&P 10 doesn't shoot either. I've put several hundred dollars of assorted ammo through it without satisfaction. Seems that some do and others don't... sounds like pay your money and take your chances. That doesn't say much for S&W quality control. I've had good luck with their revolvers over many years. Seems this is a new playground for them too...

Did you ck your barrel nut? Mine was finger tight from new!

Comment about the barrel nut got my attention. When I was cleaning after my last failed range session I noticed the flash supressor was loose, almost rattle loose, on the threads. I removed it and went out for another session. More $ down range and no improvement.

Left the flash hider off and screwed on a thread protector. I think the piece looks better and now it fits in the two gun bag I purchased originally for my 300 Blackout. May not matter anyway, it will probably end up on a used rack somewhere if I can't find a solution to this problem.

The M&P10 is proprietary from the barrel extension rearward. From a discussion on this topic on Arfcom, it seems all you would need is a reputable armorer/machine shop to remove the extension from the existing barrel, and mount it on a barrel blank of your choosing. Doing this would most certainly void your warranty though.

I really wish S&W would get their act together and sell aftermarket parts for this thing (or any parts at all). Heck, I would presume the medium profile barrel off of the hunter model would be an improvement over the pencil profile barrel.

In the end, I would love to put a 20" SS barrel on mine.

Lol. Alright, scratch the "pencil" comment and replace with "sporter." Doesnt negate the fact that the barrel is anorexic lookin' forward of the gas block. ;)

Every manufacturer makes a dud everyone in a while. Nutnfancy has a review where they the love it and it accuracy.

I love it too! Very accurate and the pencil/sporter barrel past the gas block doesn't bother me. In fact, I like the looks of it, shaves weight, and doesn't hurt accuracy that I can tell.

I had no problems with mine. It was 100% reliable with a wide range of ammo and would shoot consistent MOA or less groups with match grade ammo. Unfortunately I had to sell it due to a temporary financial emergency. I would buy another but have to admit I'm intrigued by the new DPMS GII series of .308 AR pattern rifles.
