I got a call from an obviously foreign guy who could barely speak English. Asked if I was James? Told him I was. Said he was calling form Homeland Security and listed my business Post Office Box. Asked if I had received and shipments from overseas? Said no, why? Gave some convoluted answer. I said "look, I know this is a scam". He asked how I knew? I said "you are probably in India and you can barely speak English." Seemed insulted. I said "what kind of shipment are you expecting me to get, maybe.. ..Plutonium"? That threw him. Guess I must be a terrorist.

You all think you're so clever.

The truth is when you answer these people they put your number out to all their scam buddies and you'll find you'll get way more calls.

I quit answering any unknown numbers and odd numbers and might get 1-2 scam calls a month if at that.
If you have an answering machine, it picks up the call. Thus, they got your number anyway.

The only solution is to stay home 100% and then not answer. Or, don't have an answering machine and still stay home. But that's not a solution either because if you DO go out the important calls will not leave you a message.

There is no solution.

On unknown and obviously flaky calls I always answer "Warren County Sheriff's office, may I help you". Somehow they don't wanna talk. Go figure?
I tried that. Half the time they hang up, half the time they keep talking.

I think the goobermint could solve this if they ban calls from India, or they make it impossible to scam a USA number to make the call.

I answer with an impatient and harried "desk four." That buys a pause. It's not what I say as much as how I say it.
Legit calls get an explanation and apology. Generally, they think it is funny.
Scammers, if they persist, get an aggressive "how did you get this number?" If they still persist it's off to the races.
