'Got a problem neighbor

Just my $0.02
1. Verify with the local Law Enforcement Agency what you know to be true,
that you are perfectly legal to shoot on your land
(Skip step #1 if you have already had any confirmation from Law Enforcement)

2. Next time this neighbor tells you cant shoot, simply tell him you have Confirmed that you can;
but if he doubts you suggest to have the Law come out to explain to him that its ok.

I am willing to bet that actually calling them out on him might just antagonize him,
but the offer (threat) to have LE intervene will shut him up

Get a cool weapon and invite your favorite deputy to come over and try it out. Then have him bring over the Sheriff to try it out. Before long, they will bring you over to their private (taxpayer funded) police range - and then let you check out an MP5, M4 auto, etc.

Never can have too many LEO friends :)

I live in a rural area that's slowly being urbanized by newcomers from away. My area has 2 1/2 acre minimum lot size, we have 5 acres. Law says I must be 300' from neighbors house (not out building, garage, etc) unless neighbor gives permission. Neighborhood also has a campground about 1/4mile away.
Went out back and found a good spot due to contours of land. Shooter's location ended up being 310' from one neighbor's house and 325' from the other's. Projected backstop location would be very close to 300' from one house.
Decided to talk w/local PD before proceeding further. Went up to the station told the dispatcher my question, an officer came out and we started discussing the situation. One question that arose was what did the 300' reference from; shooters location, impact point of bullet, or entire path of bullet?
To shorten this a bit, it was a slow day and pretty soon I had the shift sgt and the chief involved in the discussion. I was pleasantly surprised all the LEO's were very much in favor of me having a range if it met the requirements. Group opinion was the 300' was measured from shooter's position. Chief went so far to say if neighbors have a problem they need to move elsewhere!!
Perhaps next summer it will happen.

Keep shooting, I've been there done that. He called the sherrif and they sent a deputy. Deputy asked me if I was shooting up in the air, I told him that would be stupid and dangerous. Deputy told me to have a nice day and I havent heard another word.

If you know you are wihtin your legal rights then ignore him, when he calls the police, and if he is as scummy as you say, they will know and his credibility will be zero. Keep Shootin!!!

been there too.
I invited more friends and multiplied the ammo budget on the weekends till the crybaby hypocrite broke:D

If you were my neighbor I would stomp over to your house and ask in a loud voice (1. so you would know I was there 2. to talk over your ear protection) if I could shoot with you. Knowing 9 out of 10 time people wouldn't care I would have brought a cheap reproduction as to not show you that I had a prettier gun than you (that comes later). You could be my friend. Won't you be my neighbor? I say tell your neighbor to micturate up a rope. You're the one with the gun. I might see you changing the times and frequency if you had a neighbor that had a sleeping baby or worked 3rd shift but if not. I'd tell him to go to hades and work for the devil. Doeboy

CCTV your range

I'd invest in a digital time lapse recorder and video tape (record) all that goes on. Tell him you respect his opinion but the law is on your side here and tell him to call the cops so he can hear it from them. CCTV cameras all around should keep him on his p's & Q's. A system is not expensive a lawyer is.

I'd suggest calling a deputy...

You may get lucky and maybe that feller will do something stupid like...having drugs on him or smoking a join when the deputy starts talking to him. :D (best case scenario) I doubt the feller will call the high sheriff, as I sincerely doubt he wants to have contact with any badge if he's into illicit activity.

I would suggest having a LE appreciation bar-b-que and inviting as many uniformed deputies in patrol cars come out and shoot with you. Make friends with the gun lovers on staff at the S.D. He might get the message then. ;)

My thoughts 100%. Include K9 sniffers.

he has for the most part left us alone.
But yesterday, he came running up to me outside and told me straight out that I could not be shooting on my property any longer because he found out it was illegal.
....maybe he was just trying to be neighborly and didn't want you to get busted for breaking an ordinance. No where did you state he threatened to turn you in or call the cops if you did not stop. Either way, like it or not, he is and probably will remain your neighbor. Puttin a chip on your shoulder and escalating the situation ain't gonna solve anything. Go to whoever it is that has the jurisdiction in your area and get a copy of or other info with a clear definition of what is and what isn't legal. Thank the neighbor for his concern, but show him how after further research, you are within the law. Give him the phone # of said official and tell him to call if he still has concerns. Remind him that noise ordinances cover loud music as well as gunfire. Assure him that if he has something special going on like a wedding or funeral, you would be happy to refrain from shooting. You stated that up till now, he has left you pretty much alone. What gives you the idea that he will change, once he realizes you are within your rights? Like the family we are born into, most of us have little or no choice on who our neighbors are. Sometimes the best way to deal with them is to be tolerant of their stupidity........and not to provoke them.

As a retired LEO I suggest getting in front of this and contacting your local LE agency ASAP. Get your side of things on record. I agree with the posting that said things will get worse because they will. Do not provoke this guy, be careful around him and follow the advise of the LEO you contact. Best of luck.
