gotta get 5 teef pulled

In years past I had three wisdom teeth out with little or no discomfort. Number four one was horizontal, highly impacted and nobody wanted to touch it. Alas, a needle from another dentist dragged some bacteria down there and it had to come out. This involved a repeat of Project Ploughshare and my face came up like the elephant man. I might have taken one oxy just to get me off to sleep the first night, I cannot recall. Mind you, my wife reckons I have a very high tolerance of pain for a man, a comment repeated by doctors who have stuck me in the past.

If you follow the instructions, Tylenol toxicity simply isn't an issue. As for opioids, my only real issue is that it puts my digestive system to sleep if I take it more than twice a day. Ibuprofen works pretty well for tooth pain, but make sure to get the full prescription strength, or double up on the the OTC "baby" pills as my wife calls them..

See? If you hadn't wasted all that time and money going to law school and joined the service, the military would have gladly yanked those wisdom puppies out for free!

After the Army butchered me taking out two, I refused to see a dentitst for ten years.

The only teeth I've had out so far were wisdom teeth. I was, I think, 17 at the time. The oral surgeon wanted to do it in the hospital under general anesthesia as was common practice at the time. I, being deathly afraid of hospitals at that age, insisted on having it done in the office with local anesthesia. That meant I had to have it done in two goes about a month apart.

Boy, was that a mistake. The worst part during the operation was the horrendous sound as he broke the "impacted" teeth up into small bits to extract them. They couldn't be pulled straight out since they were laying on their sides and pressing against the rear molars. The sound of those teeth being broken up right by your ear is horrendous. The pain and swelling was horrible for a few days. Then I had to go back the next month and get the other side done.

It wasn't the smartest choice, and everyone from the doc to my friends to my parents, tried to talk me out of it. I wouldn't budge and suffered the consequences of my recalcitrance.

I've said this before: they make pain pills for a reason. AND, if you read the bottle, it tells you how many and how often to take them. If you're lucky they may give you 10-15. That's not enough to put you at the intersection of Bigelow Blvd. and Herron Avenue with a cardboard sign stating how hungry you are! I had a wisdom tooth chiseled out maybe a year or so back. That guy only gave me 5 #5/325 Vicodin. Mouth was swelled up like a golf ball and he wouldn't give me any more. It was like a kidney stone in my mouth it hurt so bad. I called the dentist that referred him; no help there! I finally called my own doctor. She refilled it for me. She knows me well and wouldn't give me something that would hurt me. She saw my mouth how swelled up it was a week after the operation. At least there wasn't anything left over inside my tooth hole. I have one wisdom tooth left. It will be a different surgeon next time.

Don't do a Friday for the reason by johngalt. You are going to ruin a long weekend.

Forget oxy. Most dentists will give you Tylenol 3 with codeine. You want Tylenol 4 with twice the codeine.

A picture( second day, ) at full swelling is required for follow up sympathy.:)

Geez, our large animal vets do house calls. The latest have been a couple of very competent and quite attractive young ladies. Even better, they have a contraption that holds the critters head up so I don't have to do it. Nothing like being a horse support post for several hours on a hot summer day:(

Moving on to human dentistry, I split one of my front upper incisors vertically and the tooth removal was no muss, no fuss. If you're doing implants to replace any teeth, one of the jaws has quite dense bone and implants are easily installed. OTOH, frequently tooth replacement in the other jaw requires bone grafts to be able to hold the implant and the bone graft takes some time to take hold. In my case, that meant a place holder to keep the other teeth from moving and no foods I needed to sever for a few months.

FIVE!!

Gives me chills just thinking about it.

Doctors do have the "good stuff" if they will give it to you. Once after back surgery doctor gave me something that made me crazy, couldn't sleep and those sort of things. I called and told them that wasn't going to work so he gave me the "good stuff" and I could see immediately how people get hooked. I too have a fear of that stuff and asap I stopped taking it.

Okay, Gary, I'm speaking now from firsthand experience. Oh...it wasn't my teeth that were pulled. But one of my mules, Cookie, had a bad winter this year and dropped a lot of weight. I took her into the vet just this past Tuesday. He checked her mouth and, sure enough, she had a couple bad teeth. Not only that, but she also had some sharp ridges on her other teeth that were keeping her from grinding up her food entirely, thus not getting the nutrients she needed.

He first wrenched her mouth open with this huge clamp, took a pair of long-handled pliers and extracted two teeth, then took an electric grinder with a 12-inch bit on the end and smoothed the sharp ridges. I don't know what he gave her as a sedative, but it was pretty obvious she wasn't feeling any pain for a couple days. I can give you his number if you want.

Oh, I need to tell you that there may be side effects. According to the vet, Cookie should be putting on an extra 100 pounds in the next month or two. Don't know how your weight is, but...hey, it might be worth thinking about.:D

Chip hot darn, Cookies mouth looks a damn better than mine  Ya want to take over my dental care:cool:?

Went to Dentist for a filling and Dr said good you have had your wisdom teeth pulled. At that time I had never had a tooth pulled. Never had any I guess. As far as meds go I fell and thought I may have broken some ribs. Went to ER and turned out they were only cracked. ER Dr gave me a scrip for pain meds. Found out scrip was for extra strength Tylenol. After two days of pain went to GP. When found out what ER DR gave me he just shook his head and gave some good stuff. Getting good pain killers when you really need them is hard to do these days. I have taken opioids several time and never had a problem with them. Took them until pain was gone and that was it. Had a half bottle of oxycontin sit on shelf for two years still I took them in to the drug disposal been at my drug store.

Whether or not you think you need them and only sissies need pain meds, you should take every opportunity and hoard them like squirrels collecting nuts for the winter.

I had the upper molar on the right side pulled a few years ago because I
was always biting the inside of my jaw. I still have 27 original teeth, so
at 88 I think I am kinda fortunate.

Well put.

For the last 11 years my life has been one of daily pain management. I would be miserable without prescription meds.

Better living through chemistry.

GREAT idea, never thought about that! The vicodin #5/325 don't do SQUAT for me. Need at least the 7.5 or better the 10/325. (had the 10/325 for the extraction and implant done a year ago) Gobbled three of them over 2 days and pitched the rest. Important thing is to start taking them before the pain kicks in. Didn't know that still made tylenol 3 and 4

I've spent more time in a dental chair than one person should. Broken jaws, upper and lower both sides; knocked out my front teeth; four root canals; an implant that went bad and had to be redone; crowns; braces; yada, yada.

Last year I had my first surgery that was not oral. My surgeon is conservative and prescribed Gabapentin with a Tylenol, of appropriate strength, if needed. It worked beautifully!

Ask your dentist if this is something that may work for you. Good luck.

While living in Cincinnati I had 17 teeth pulled in one sitting. Four were my wisdom teeth, both bottom ones were wrapped around my jaw bone. Had it done in the surgeons office.

When I woke up from the surgery they had me numbed up really good. When I got home I took one of the pain pills they gave me and went to bed. I was really worried how I'd feel when I woke up and the numbing had wore off.

Other than being swelled up pretty good, I wasn't in any pain, unless I bit down, and the upper denture plate hit my bottom teeth. That was most painful, but I never had any need for the rest of the pain pills they gave me. If I had needed them, you can bet I'd have took them.

Couple years later I picked up my bother in law from the oral surgeon after he had his 4 wisdom teeth pulled. On the way home he wanted me stop at Mc.D's to get him a Big Mac. Told him I didn't think that was a good idea, but he ate it before getting to his house. Never bothered him a bit.

For anyone in fear of getting addicted to pain pills, it's not going to happen in a week or two. They make them for people to have a better quality of life. Can't see a reason to suffer, when a pill can help.
