I own a model 27-2. Great gun.
It wasn't until I bought the gun I saw model 28's around the forum.
I've also heard people use the pre "27/28" moniker on Highway Patrolman models.
So in my modest ignorance I have to ask, how is a model 28 any different?

The model 28 is the economy model... matte blue instead of high polish or nickle, smooth instead of checkered on top of barrel and frame as well as only offered in 4" and 6" instead of the whole range of barrel lengths in a model 27.

I'll repeat an analogy I've used before.

The Model 27 is the pickup with every box checked on the option sheet. Leather, A/C, nav system, the works.

The Model 28 is the work truck with the black plastic grill and the bedliner.

Same engine and transmission under the hood, same ability, but the 28 costs a LOT less. The 27 cost too much to get large orders from law enforcement agencies. The 28 was the answer.

Haha that's a good way to look at it, and the explanation makes a lot of sense. Who needs top strap checkering on a duty piece.

The 27's are drop dead gorgeous firearms when in good condition, but the look a bit "hagged out" when worn. On the other hand, the 28's aren't things of beauty when pristine, however they age gracefully when used.

I have a 27-2 that is nearly 100% plus an 80-85% model 28-2 and both look "right" in their respective conditions.

In addition to the higher polish, deeper blue, checkered top strap, barrel rib and a wider variety of barrel lengths, many 27's also were provided with a target hammer, target trigger, target Goncalo Alves grips and the presentation case....

When everything was considered, many 27's had the same premium extras as the other top N frame models like the 29's, 57's and 25's..

The beautiful and exclusive extra checkering put the 27's in a premium class all their own...:)

Thanks, BaldEagle1313. The reality is I don't "hold a candle" to some of the great photographers on this board.

Like you said about the subject matter.... I guess my love of the S&W line shows through on occasion and maybe it reflects in the pictures.

Thank again for your generous comments!!:):)

Me. An old man told me that guns are like women. You feel better if you have a good looking one. Larry

True, but very often a plainer version with a better disposition serves a man better in the long run.
