No, I am not with the band...

If you have not heard Lynyrd Skynyrds title track to their new album, called "God & Guns", I believe many here will enjoy it. It inspired my username and avatar. The lyrics are below, the song is great also, even if you're not a Skynyrd fan.

**edit** you can hear it here on YouTube

Last night I heard this politician
Talking 'bout his brand new mission
I Liked his plans, but they came undone
when he got around to God and Guns

I don't know how he grew up
But it sure wasn't down at the hunting club
Cause if it was he'd understand
just a little bit more about the working man

God and guns
Keep us strong
That's what this country
Was founded on

Well we might as well give up and run
If we let them take our God and guns

Out here in my neck of the woods
Where God is great and guns are good
You really can't know that much about 'em
If you think we're better off without 'em

Well there was a time we ain't forgot
You could rest all night with the doors unlocked
But there ain't nobody safe no more
So you say your prayers and you thank the Lord

For that peace maker
In the dresser drawer

God and Guns
Keep us strong
That's what this country, Lord
Was founded on

Well we might as well give up and run,
If we let 'em take our God and guns.

Yea we might as well give up and run,
If we let 'em take our God and guns!

Yeaaa
Ooh
God and guns

Don't let 'm take
Don't you let 'm take
Don't let 'm take
Our God and Guns

Oh God and Guns
Yea keep us strong
That's what this country, Lord
Was founded on

Well we might as well give up and run,
If we let 'em take our God and guns!

Glad to see it. A ray of sunshine in the murk of liberal-leaning ideology that is much of the entertainment industry these days.

In the interest of full disclosure: I like Skynard but never much cared for "Saturday Night Special" off their "Nuthin' Fancy" album which sounds pretty anti-gun to me. Perhaps they're making atonement.

Two feets they come a creepin'
Like a black cat do
And two bodies are lyin' naked
Creeper think he got nothin' to lose
So he creeps into this house, yeah
And unlocks the door
And while a man reaching for his trousers
Shoots him full of .38 holes

Its a Saturday night special
Got a barrel that's blue and cold
Ain't no good for nothin'
But put a man six feet in a hole

Big Jim's been drinkin' whiskey
And playing poker on a losin' night
Pretty soon, Big Jim starts a thinkin'
Somebody been cheatin' and lyin'
So Big Jim commences to fightin'
I wouldn't tell you no lie
And Big Jim done grab his pistol
Shot his friend right between the eyes

Its a Saturday night special
Got a barrel that's blue and cold
Ain't no good for nothin'
But put a man six feet in a hole

Hand guns are made for killin'
Ain't no good for nothin' else
And if you like your whiskey
You might even shoot yourself
So why don't we dump 'em people
To the bottom of the sea
Before some fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me

Its a Saturday night special
Got a barrel that's blue and cold
Ain't no good for nothin'
But put a man six feet in a hole.

This should be a condemnation of bad behavior but instead it's the handgun that takes the blame. The song misses the point.

You are correct, that song was written by original band lead singer Ronie VanZant. But recently, Lynyrd Skynyrd appeared on the Hannity show, and Hannity asked Johnny VanZant (Ronnies brother and now lead singer) about that song. He said that back then, his brother had a gun pulled on him and stuck in his face in some bar, and that experience caused that song to be written. Some of that interview is here on YouTube. They say straight out that they are pro 2nd amendment.

Skynyrd will be touring with Charlie Daniels and Michael W Smith in the Sean Hannity 2010 Freedom Concert tour (website here).

I picked up my copy of the CD this afternoon, also my Hannity Freedom Concert tickets arrived in yesterday's mail. Can't wait until August for the concert!

Very interesting. Like Bryan, I have always turned the radio when I heard Skynard, because of that old song. Hmmm.

Guess some of us actually wise up as we grow older...;)

I edited the first post with a link to the song on YouTube for anyone wanting to hear it.

Here are two other songs from the album that you'll like:
That Ain't My America
Simple Life
