Gun buying panic over?

What seems to be different this time around is the depletion of inventory of ammo for bolt guns. Think everything from .243 to 7mm-08 to.300 Win. Mag. Same with shotgun ammo. I expected a run on OO buck, but around here just about everything but target loads for sporting clays is gone -- I had to mail-order for my fall turkey hunt. Of course, a lot of the shortage of both guns and ammo seem to be a somewhat localized phenomena. It's 2020, so it's weird.

I have to ask, but did you absolutely have to buy that ammo today?

Nope.

The 9mm was $22. I can't find Buckshot so I bought 2 boxes which was the max. Have a minimum of .223 and am going shooting, so I wanted enough to at least fill my mags. Plus, I drove all the way there, so wanted to leave with something. Every time I stop by I always leave with at least $100 in ammo. This time there was a lot less.

Is there anyone in America at this point who doesn't have a gun? I heard 5 million first time buyers in 4 months.

After the spring gun buying 'panic,' some on the forum believed that the "Honey, get that thing out of the house" phenomenon would lead to many nearly unfired semi-autos being returned to LGSs. I guess this has not happened?

With the second surge of the crud starting to roll and other upcoming events, I doubt the "why did I buy this?" moment will be with us for a few months.

I'm thinking you ain't seen nothin' yet.
Yeah, I'm sure not seeing things getting better in my area. I did a lengthy multi-shop tour on Wednesday and I have never seen so many people shopping for guns and ammo on a weekday. Zero 9mm ammo anywhere and guns going out the door like no tomorrow at the big, well-financed shops. At the smaller Ma & Pa shops, still nothing but a few odd over-priced consignment guns and, again, zero 9mm ammo.

Bass Pro has become my "2020 Walmart" in my quest to keep the ammo stash healthy. I've had some small successes with repeated visits, but barely enough to mention. Certainly no 9mm and zero .32 S&W Long for my new (to me) .32 revolver. :(

No improvements or successes on-line either. :(

No joy here. Some revolvers in the LGS showcase, and a limited supply of ammo for them. An occasional auto loader will show up in the used gun showcase, but it doesn't last long. Still a dearth of 380, 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45acp ammo.

Everybody throws those "millions" numbers around for their purposes. Pro-gun folks are positively impressed that people are preparing, but ticked off about prices, and anti-gunners scream "Gaaa!!!! More guns on the streets! Massacres looming!"

The reality is that in a nation of 330 million plus, these still aren't very big numbers and it's a niche market. Those 5 million are a measly 1.5% or so of the population; that's significant for the gun market, but not for the country.

I thought I had plenty of 9m/m, .45, and 5.56 but taking my mens church group on a shooting retreat and they burned through it fast! I still have some ammo but not much, and I was at Academy Sports and they pulled out a cart of Ameircan Eagle 20 round boxes of 5.56 for $6.99 and I grabbed four boxes while other hands were pawing at it and the ammo was all quickly gone. I'm almost surprised there wasn't a fight.

Fortunately, I would buy ammo whenever it was on sale. Whether I needed it or not. But had a training class scheduled which originally required 500 rounds of 9mm. Because of the shortage he scaled it back to 250. A couple of guys stopped at an LGS on the way to class. They paid $560 per 1,000 for 9mm. I still have a little that I paid 18 cents a round for. It appears though as of guns are out there, with the exception of Glocks.

From what I have seen it is nowhere near over. Only now the emphasis is strictly on ammo and not firearms. Many people have already gotten what they feel comforatble with. LGS are stocked with brand new rifles with the only shortage is certain handguns and shotrbarrelled shotguns.

Right now, ammo in my neck of the woods ranks up there with finding Bigfoot or seeing a unicorn or finding the Loch Ness Mosnter etc etc etc.

I visited two local gun shops Thursday night, both seemed to be well stocked both in handguns and ammunitions. The one shop had what I was looking for plus night sights for future purchased. The new and used rifle racks were ready for hunting season.
The only thing I was limited to two boxes of ammo for the handgun I had just purchased. 1 standard,1 hollowpoint.
Other then that for them it looked like business was good and the one manager told me it's been very good!;)

Ammo was sparse, and you were limited to one or two boxes. The exception was shotgun ammo. Plenty of 12g 7,8,9. Buckshot was a whole different story. I got the last 2 boxes.

Here's what $80 gets you in a shortage!

JMR,, I went to two local gun shows over the last two weekends,,

That stack of ammo you quote as $80?? That would have cost a minimum of $150 at the lowest cost tables, at either show.

9MM is $1 a bullet, cheap, old 5.56 military is $100 for 140 rounds loose.
Boxed 5.56 is $35 for a 20 round box, and it was selling.

350 rounds of 22LR Auto Match bulk ammo was $80. That was the lowest cost 22LR I saw.

12 gauge buckshot (25 round box), a brand I never heard of,, was $50 a box,, and selling.

If a person hasn't panicked by now they aren't going to.:)

I resemble that remark. I saw no point in wasting diesel cruising around the Vegas Valley to view lines of grumpy people and empty shelves. The only times I've been in a gun store is to collect transfers from out of state.

I'm not a Walmart fan but I was in neighborhood so figured I'd take a look 12&20 gauge target ammo was decent shape 100round case approx $23 no 410 at all no slugs, buckshot, field loads. 300win mag and 30-30 only centerfire in case I grabbed 4 boxes of 22mag CCI that was still good price $12 and last box of federal 12g #6& Winchester 12g #6. Slim pickings indeed.

Stopped in a local large sporting goods store (Guns and hunting equipment) for the first time in months the other day. They had about 200 handguns displayed on the walls, both revolvers and semi-autos. Very little ammo (other than shotgun small game loads) and a sparse selection of .22 rimfire. Fortunately I still have my 3-5 year supply intact.

Just for my own tickles and giggles
I checked with one of the popular
on-line auction sites for S&W Model
19s, 66s, 586s and 686s. Nothing,
no used, no new, no nothing.

It may just be that the Covid virus
has really affected S&W production
and new made old line revolver models
just aren't being made right now.

Noted that the Python 2020 are listed
but bidders right now pushing up prices
to $2,000 or more.

Just might be that my Model 19 could
be worth $10,000 pretty soon. Shucks,
think I'll put it up for $20,000.

I was looking around at some online sites that sell LE trade in firearms. They had Glock G22.4's selling for $321, M&P FS 45's for $389, and G17.4's for $339. 9mm and .40 cal. FMJ ammo was selling for $12.99-$17.99 boxes of 50.
It's out there. You just have to look in the right places. ;)

That would be a big Nope!

Regardless of who wins the POTUS election gun sells will be astronomical. If Trump wins the Socialists will be rioting. If Biden wins their will be sanctioned BLM/Antifa riots. Either way all "normal" Americans will be at home loaded to the max hoping the riots won't affect them.
