I just talked to a guy name Ned Kessler who was Pistol Pete for OSU in 1971. He said the guns din't have any modifications or provisions for firing blanks, they were the same as anything else you would buy at the gun store. He said they didn't take the guns to road games even back then. It would be impolite to shoot'em off and make a bunch of noise when you are the visitor. Some of those places were pretty hostile and they might start shooting back!
