Gun Grabber Mark Kelly buys AR15 to prove point?

Mark Kelly is spinning his recent purchase of an AR15 from a local Tucson gun shop as his way of proving how easy it is to obtain such a "dangerous" weapon. At the same time he purchased a .45 pistol. I guess a .45 isn't dangerous, although his wife was shot with a 9mm.

1. If he wanted to prove a point, why not purchase an inflated priced AR from a gun show without a background check and immediate delivery? Instead he was subject to a background check AND 20 day waiting period since the rifle was a trade in.

2. Obviously he already knows the process for buying a long rifle, such as AR, is not any different than buying any other firearm in AZ. So why do it to prove a point? Wonder if he knew there was a 20 day waiting period on that particular used rifle? I certainly wouldn't consider a background check and 20 day waiting period "easy to obtain".

Sorry Mark, but I don't believe your claim. It would be interesting to know how this story broke. Was he caught purchasing the AR then changed his story or did he first publicly release the story himself.

Btw....he claims he will turn over the AR to local police (straw purchase?), but keep the pistol.

Why would he perform some action to be used by his PAC or whatever it stands for without a single mention of it on the PAC website? The only reasons are incompetence or hypocrisy.

I am more inclined to believe the latter, and that he needed a face-saving lie to wiggle out of being caught.

Kelly's logic has no logic to it, only poorly conceived excuses.

He says he bought the AR to turn it in. Why financially support an industry and in particular a firearm he's against?

He claims he bought the weapons to have "first hand" knowledge of firearms purchasing, yet also claims to be a gun owner and enthusiast. How many gun enthusiasts have zero experience buying a gun?

He says he wanted to show how quick and easy it is to acquire a dangerous weapon. Yet he doesn't mention that due to local ordinance, he can't take possession the AR until 20 days after purchase.

He says he wanted to show how fast and easy it is for anyone to pass a background check. But he's a high-profile, much decorated astronaut and husband of a former government official with all the micro-vetting that history implies. He hardly represents the average background check.

He says he wanted to undergo the background check to affirm the need to close the "gun show and private sales loop". These are so logically unconnected my head hurts.

Yep, I think he just got caught. If he really wanted to prove a point of easy access to guns, then he should have purchased from private seller without a backgroung check or waiting period. Afterall, AZ is a free state. That would have helped his cause, but to go through a background check and waiting period.....well I don't see how that helps makes their case.

I also read somewhere he was first denied by the gun shop because he did not have proper AZ id. He came back to the shop with correct id to complete the purchase.

Like I said in my original post, I'd be interested to know how this story broke. If he's the one that broke the story, then his logic is flawed. If he had to come clean after the story broke, then he is now making excuses to cover his ***.

Next we'll read he was spotted at the local shooting range so he can "experience" shooting such a dangerous and lethal weapon.

Maybe he spent too much time in zero gravity? There's a reason we are stuck on this planet.

Well, he's a very active and public supporter of assault weapon ban, magazine limits and universal background checks....so I'd say he believes the rot.

What he's done is inexcusable... and I'm sure it'll come back on him "six ways from Sunday" in due time. He could have supported his wife and steered or tempered her personal needs vs selling us all out.

He says he bought the guns planning on turning them over to the police. He admitted he did not plan to be the ultimate owner. This makes him a straw purchasers, which is illegal. The first question on the federal form concerns straw purchases, and he must of lied in answering that question, which is a felony.

His wife has serious mental issues. She is so incapicatated mentally that she could not serve her term out. In some states and under proposed laws he could not be able to keep guns in the same household with her. They are using mental incapication of a spouse, in Calif as an excuse to confiscate guns.

His purchase wasn’t a straw purchase. You can buy a firearm as a gift and it is perfectly legal. He is making a gift to the police department.

A straw purchase is acting as a buyer for someone that is a restricted person. Say your friend gives you money to go buy a gun because he knows he will fail the back ground check. That is a straw purchase. The person making the buy lies on the very first question of form 4473 by stating they are the actual purchaser. The purchaser and the real buyer have committed a felony; all be one that is rarely prosecuted.

I still think he is an everyday elitist hypocrite. I doubt his story.

That is reaching a bit.
A straw purchase is when an individual buys a gun for another individual. Buying one to turn in to the police is hardly qualified as a straw purchase. See the pic of the definition on the 4473.
