I'm of the firm belief that you are WAY better off with a little too much lubrication, than with too little.
This is especially true when you are shooting quite a lot with an aluminum framed semiauto pistol.
The slide is much harder than the frame, and without sufficient lubrication, the steel slide will wear the aluminum frame rails.
Another critical spot is the unlocking 'lugs' built into the frames of S&W semiauto pistols. In an aluminum frame pistol, they are aluminum, and are hit hard by the barrel with each shot. Keeping these two critical spots well lubricated will extend the life of an aluminum framed S&W semiauto.
That is almost EVERY Model 39 and 59, and of course a great many of the 2nd and 3rd generation semiautos, as well.
I use grease on the unlocking lugs on my 5906, just as I do on my 6906.
