GUN HANDLING IN WESTERNS.

That gunslinging thing also was a result of the old cap and ball revolvers.

Many times the fired caps would fall off of the nipple when the hammer was pulled back and drop down in front of the hammer.

The solution was to point the gun in the sky, pull the hammer back and allow that primer to exit the area before the trigger was pulled again.

Yes, this!

I was waiting for someone to mention the cap and ball protocol.

I have been trying to break my son of twirling his toy guns as a dangerous habit.

When I was in the service an Air Policeman was twirling his pistol and shot himself in the foot as he holstered it .. They sent him back to the states for medical attention because of it .. Last we heard was he got court marshalled an drummed out .. He ended up losing 2 toes and part of his foot because of it ..

Twirling a pistols isn't safe .. Only bad things will come of it ..

Thank you, Iggy. I was beginning to think I was the only one that knew that.

I always liked how the guy would cock his pistol, then, while it was STILL COCKED, use the muzzle to push up the brim of his hat. Looked real cool. :)

Bonanza

I remember Little Joe cleaning a side by side shotgun - he had the action open and was running the cleaning rod down the barrels from the muzzle towards the breech.

Makes me grit my teeth to this day.

There's a scene in El Dorado in which Mississippi (James Cann) puts his double barreled sawed off on his shoulder with his finger on the trigger and the muzzle pointed SQUARE at John Wayne's head.

Movie or not I'd have said something to Caan
