Gun Identification

Hi all,

I've inherited my granddad's gun and I'm finally getting into shooting. Any help identifying it is greatly appreciated. Here's the low down:

.38 S&W Special
Serial number 1081X
Barrel is a hair under 5"

On the frame behind the yoke "84 86" is stamped but the yoke is unstamped - manufacturing number i guess. The last patent year date listed on the top is "Oct 4 98" and followed by a cross insignia.

This is a .38 Military & Police model of 1899, from about 1900. It is the only vintage M & P without the forward ejector rod locking point. About 20,000 were made up until 1902, and it should be used with standard or light pressure loads. Hope this is helpful.

PS It is either the rare left-handed variation, or your photo is reversed .

Thank you very much. I didn't realize the computer reversed it, took it with my laptop camera. I'm surprised a M&P gun came with a pearl handle.. must be a cush job, bet they even had free doughnuts and coffee.
