OK, yet another question in the never-ending quest for truth, justice, etc. . . I’ve been in conversation with “experts”, such as the state Attorney General’s office, upper echelon of the state police, security firms, and local state police patrolmen, about the advisability/inadvisability of putting warning signs up regarding the property being protected by firearms, and the advisability/inadvisability of carrying firearms openly on our property.

The responses I’ve gotten thus far range to advisable – inadvisable – and everything in between. A review of literature (what there was of it that was even close to applicable), proved to be a waste of my time. Security firms were all in favor of installing their systems, including their signage. When I mentioned that I’d read that while having a system was a good idea, omitting the signage was also a good idea, they disagreed. I got the impression they were more interested in advertising their system being on the premises rather than what’s in our best interests, so I quickly discounted their points of view.

The Attorney General’s office advised placing “do not trespass” signs prominently on the perimeter of the premises. To my original inquiry re: gun signage – they were noticeably quiet – rendering no opinion even remotely pro or con, but decidedly in the middle. Again, No help there.

The state police, both upper and lower ranks, were equally mixed about their opinions. They also favored the “no trespass” signs. Again, no real help there.

Unfortunately, pertaining to the open-carrying of a firearm on our own property, while it’s legal, the opinions about the effects/results were again mixed by all parties (except security firms – I didn’t ask them). Some stated it could be a deterrent to would-be miscreants, given the obvious potential of significant bodily harm to themselves, while others felt it could be an incentive to a would-be miscreant seeking to obtain a firearm.

What we’re seeking here are positive suggestions about the 2 issues mentioned, specifically: 1) the advisability/inadvisability of posting warning signs regarding the property being protected by firearms; and 2) the advisability/inadvisability of open-carrying firearms on our property.

While the opinions pertaining to dogs, lights, sirens, fences, reinforced doors, reinforced windows, and so on and so forth, were offered in good faith (and many of them are being looked into currently), we feel they’ve been covered ad infinitum/ad nauseum, and therefore don’t need readdressing herein. Our gratitude and appreciation are submitted to all who constructively contribute to this topic of conversation. Thank you!!!

Damn!!! Can you believe that??? I can spell “signage”, but obviously can’t type it this early in the morning . . . What's next!?!?!?

Al Hurt, Jmace57,
Thank Youi very much, guys!!! I REALLY appreciate your providing me the steps on correcting my typo!!! That's valuable information, as I'm sure I'll do it again . . . I typically type my entries in Word, which auto-corrects spelling/grammar/syntax as I go. Then I proof read the entry a couple of times to catch what Word can't. After that, I just copy the text into the site. But, the title box is another issue, and that's where my semi-questionable typing comes to fore . . . A key reason why I hated EMR's (electronic medical record systems). Thx!!!

Man. how I miss my Big Chief tablet and Crayons . . . . .

What kind of property are we talking about here? Business, residential? Opinions are probably going to be different for a daycare as opposed to a gun store.

Edited to add: You can edit your post and "Go Advanced" to correct the title of your original post.

I have a "Wireless Security System" at the end of the driveway at the cabin.... my Dad a retired Police Capt. put it up over 20 years ago.....along with safety zone signs.

Everyone knew who my Dad was and what he did..... no one's ever questioned the system.

I've had a Pa. concealed Carry permit for 40 years...... I carry "concealed" even when walking in Penn's woods.

If they’re willing to break into your house, being ticketed for trespassing isn’t going to even register with them, if they can even read the sign. The tresspassing sign is for your protection. As in “hey, it was posted.”

A “we have guns” sign might as well say “come rob me.”

If you’re open carrying for your convenience, fine. If you’re doing it to intimidate bad guys, no. They won’t be intimidated. You just strapped on a “attack me for my gun” sign, and you’ve given up any element of surprise you would have had by concealed carrying. There are some good videos on YouTube of open carriers at fast food places being targeted and having their pistols taken.

Here in coastal North Carolina, aka SemperFi Land, you see numerous types of "tells" that should give most criminals a clue that they will encounter armed resistance.

Some often seen tells are flying flags like the American, USMC, Don't Tread on Me, Molon Labe, and even the Confederate Battle Flag. Signs that proclaim support for 2A and decals on cars or trucks parked in the driveways that support a particular brand of gun or guns are also strong clues.

I fly the American flag next to the front steps to my front door as just one more layer of security I have at my home to dissuade a fool from an unwelcomed forced entry.

I wouldn't advertise or open carry a gun on my property because I live in a development with 0.3 acre lots and there are a lot of kids in the neighborhood with helicopter moms.

"No Trespassing"? Yes, in various locations on the property (exterior of fencing).

"Beware of Dog!"? Yes, most definitely. On entrance doors and ground-level windows (not all, but a few). Also on exterior of fencing.

Gun warning signs of any type, but especially those with cute little sayings and pictures on them anywhere on my residence or property? No, absolutely not. For the same reason there are no firearms-related decals and NRA stickers on either of my vehicles now. I keep a low profile. What's on my property or in my possession is my business, as long as it's legal. I don't advertise my interest in firearms.

My sign says "This property as well as my jewelry, coin collection, and other highly valuable items are protected by my large gun collection".

I agree with the others, no gun signs anywhere on my property. I do have a security system sign posted though. Also like Watchdog, I won't stick an NRA, or hunting related stickers on my vehicles. To me it's saying "there might be a gun in this truck" as well as "follow me home to see where I live so you can rob me later".

If you edit your original message and go to "go advanced" button...you can edit your title.

Tactics

First, advertising the presence of guns can invite a burglary as you cannot be home all the time to guard them.

Secondly, telling a would-be adversary that you're armed makes him change his tactics to a lightning-swift move in an attempt to deny you the opportunity to reach your gun. Uniformed police officers have been successfully disarmed with this tactic.

Poor judgment and tactics is what mostly gets the good guys killed. You need to stack the deck in your favor. YOU NEED TO BE THE STEEL FIST IN THE VELVET GLOVE.
