Has anyone heard of or used this gun record keeping software program, My Gun DB - The best way to manage your collection I purchased it earlier this week, it is unbelievable! I've been gathering paperwork for entering every night. The program records about anything you may want regarding our guns, value, purchase price, description, picture, accessories.. on and on. Too much to list. Check it out if you are looking for a way to track your prized possesions... I'm shocked at what the real value of what I have listed so far, it gives a totals number...

I wouldn't want that information on a laptop that could be stolen, or a base unit that could be hacked. My computer inventory is on an old computer that is not hooked up to anything except an electrical outlet.

Not at all to me, so where do you secure your guns.. Fort Knox... it's a program you download, it's nothing on a server out in Thailand somewhere..

I thought about it myself, decided I have all that info at my home somewhere, if somebody wants it, they're taking it. Just like my guns, if they want it, they are taking it. If somebody took my computor or hacked it, what do ya think they would do, build a gun and stamp your serial number on it.. commit a robbery and leave a piece a paper saying this gun was used in a felony leaving a serial number they hacked off your computor.

Help me to understand, what am I missing.. you use your computor here to post, aren't you afraid someone is monitoring you and going use whatever you type here against you... Talking with my engineering friend as I type this and he had the same initial response, then I asked him what exactly was the problem... he just wrote down the website and can't wait to get home and download it..:)

We also just talked about options, like just downloading onto a data stick and plugging it in and out when needed, nothing would be downloaded on the computor..

I hope you don't mind me hopping in here, I'm actually the author of MyGunDB. It stores all your data in an encrypted database so even if your laptop was stolen, or hacked, they'd need to specifically get a copy of MyGunDB to run and know your password for the database. The password isnt' stored anywhere -- it's used to generate the decryption hash on the fly. That means if you lose your password there is no way to recover it.

Security is of utmost concern to me -- I have a page about it here:

Security | My Gun Database

Besides, a hacker would have to specifically target you AND have the same gun as you -- why would they stamp a gun with your serial anyway (which is easier said than done) instead of just removing the serials from whatever gun they have? It just doesn't make sense; you'd have a greater chance of hitting the lottery than someone targeting you, hacking your computer, cracking your password and the encryption system, happen to have the same firearm as you and take the time to put your serial on it.

Basically using MyGunDB is more secure than a handwritten bound book/list or most other software people seem to use for inventorying.

I found out about the program when Buds on Line sent me a offer to buy it. Then I went direct to the website. I am considering getting it. I have my own home hobbled together system with basically a written journal and photos that are scanned on my computer. Then have copies on jump drives, back up drive, in the safe, in my pillow under the bed and a few others I can't find.;) So if they steal my computer, yes, they will have pictures and serial numbers, Then they can report them stolen.:D

I have put off getting the program as it sounds like office work of redundancy Department. I could let my wife enter the data as she types way better than me, but then she would freak out.

You could always install the free version which would let you track your ammo and accessories -- then if you end up entering more than 10 firearms, you could purchase it. Otherwise the free version is fully functional except for that 10 gun limit. :D

:DThanks, the Cavalry is here... thank God it's not Custer!! That's exactly what I did, I dwnlded the free copy, checked it out, figured out how it worked, got the first 10 guns in than almost choked when the message showed up saying the fun is done, time to pay up...:D I couldn't get to Paypal quick enough, then the horror began.,. I had to wait for Wolf to send me the code to open it up.. I was jonesing to load in more info, I'm up to 33 guns and gotta say, have to find more paperwork to continue adding to the list. Once done, I'll start the photo part of the program, lots of pics to take. Then comes the ammo!!! Oh boy, is that part gonna be fun... needless to say, I got plenty of time this winter, plenty of guns and ammo to play with and all I can say is .... A BIG THANK YOU TO ALAN!!!!

Hahah thanks for the kind words :D

Wait till you see some of the features I'm working on :D

If you're worried about your computer being hacked get a hardware firewall that is the best prevention for hacking.

If you're looking for a great database to keep a record of your gun, ammo, and accessories, get Gun DB. It works both on a PC and a Mac. I've had it for sometime and it's good stuff, Maynard.

Adobe Air? I'm not familiar with Adobe Air. What is the difference between that and a cross framework platform like Qt, wxWidgets, FLTK, etc.?

Personally, if I need something like this, I'd write it myself for myself but I'm all for supporting independent programmers.

Sorry for the delay, missed your reply.

AIR uses Adobe's Flash framework, which is on 99% of all networked computers -- it integrates the Flex programming language basically.

Adobe AIR is a cross-operating system runtime that enables web developers to use their existing web development skills, code and tools to build and deploy rich web applications and content to the desktop.
Adobe AIR has a rich set of features, with support for building applications using HTML, JavaScript, Flex and Flash.

Basically coding in Flex with AIR is a lot like coding in Java, style-wise.

Just an update to my MYGUNDB.. still lovin it, even more now that I've gotten most of my guns listed. To back up to a few years ago, I got into guns late when my father passed away, leaving me with about 100 guns of various value, none of which I had any idea about value or anything else. Needless to say, I went through quite an ordeal figuring out what to do. I sold a majority of the guns, many vintage war collectible pieces, doing the best I could to get an idea of value and exactly what they were. Looking back, if I had the info I have now I would have done things differently. Also, If I had a good accurate record of what each weapon was, some kind of purchase price and current value, things would have gone much differently when I sold them. That is why I am ecstatic with MYGUNDB, it allows me to make a great, complete record of what I have so that, should something happen to me, my family is not in the dark trying to figure out what to do. How many times do we see this scene play out here, Father passed away, does anybody know what this gun is and what it's worth!!! Nobody wants to write a will, this is no different, none of us want to see what our family has to go through, I lived it, don't want my wife or kids to have to.

Ok, back to my update, I've always planned to keep track of how many rounds I've fired out of each gun but never got around to getting things organized. I tend to do nothing if I'm not comfortable with doing something right. I've been procrastinating for almost 2 years with this. I bought the NRA gun recording book, still haven't done anything with it. I think I didn't use it because after getting it and paying about twice as much as MYGUNDB costs, I realized it still wasn't what I was looking for.. now that I have all the valueable info on each gun recorded, I am beginning to figure out how many rounds I've fired through each gun, I love it, it's so simple to input. Best of all whenever I shoot now, I just type in how many rounds I fired for that gun and hit the enter key... done.

I still have tons of stuff to play with, think I may start with my stored ammo..... noo think I'll work on accessories, I have all kinds of stuff, I want to record what and a value on.. Keep the software updates coming Alan!!

Done with my rant, hope it helps someone..

awsome... where do I go to download, your web site... what kind of changes did you make?

You can use the install button on mygundb.com but if you run the program, it will check for updates automatically and let you install any (as long as you don't disable the check in the Settings page).

The changelog for v1.9.2 is:

  • Free users can have 10 firearms, not 11 like the program was allowing
  • Fixed BATF Changes Report to be under A&D Reports, and to display the proper report now
  • Check for Update added to Help menu
  • HQ Print option moved to Reports screen
  • <Wish I had something witty to put here>
  • Finish percentage defaults to 100% for new firearms instead of 0%.
  • Warning pops up for Beta users to tell them to set a new password due to encryption changes. Stops appearing once they have done so.
  • Phone numbers settable in Purchase/Sale tab
  • BATF report no longer available with Basic Registration
  • Ammo tab now has a box to let you subtract from selected ammo and add to round count at same time.

Even more changes out yesterday:

Not only have there been a lot of changes in the latest version (v1.98) of the Desktop program, including reorganizing the Tab bar and having a collection statusbar now, but I've also released the Mobile edition for Android (Don't worry, IOS version will be submitted about 5 mins after Apple finishes my paperwork!).

It's on the Android app store and is being processed for the Nook store and Amazon's app store as well!
