Gun shop 629-3 5" full lug, factory rubber, no lock, pin on hammer, factory drilled top strap, no box/papers. Clerk thought it might be a Lew Horton. It has been shot but barely. The action still feels raw, new, not at all broken in. No cartridge imprints on shield. Very light rings on cylinder face. I'm guessing maybe 6 rounds fired. Some odd but light scratches top and bottom of inside frame window. Otherwise very minor handling marks. Asking $1099.98 (At least it wasn't $1100.00). On used guns the shop will bargain a little but not much. I get the impression most customers don't bargain.

I don't really have any money at the moment but I do like the gun. What do you guys think of the asking price? The tag did indicate that it has been there several months. Sorry I didn't take pics.

They also have a 6" -3, also full lug but it has the lock.

I'm not interested but they also have a 10-5 for $400. Minor muzzle holster wear. also some speckles on frame but it would otherwise have a nice 90+ blued finish. The action is very tight.

I can't really imagine what it's life was. The holster wear on the front of the barrel indicates a working gun but the tight action and otherwise lack of evidence of being shot much contradicts that. Someone required to carry but not required to qualify? My experience was that even the house mice had to at least qualify a couple of times a year.

Thoughts? Especially on the 5" 629-3?

I don't think that there was ever any 686-3 with a 5" barrel; at least not from the factory.

If your questions are a bout 5" 629-3 Classic (full lug), this was a standard barrel length offering in the -3 but not as many produced as the 6.5". They tend to command higher prices then the other barrel lengths (6.5 and 8 3/8) in the -3,-4 and -5 versions of the 629 Classic series.

You did not mention what grips it is wearing. Factory grips for the 629-3 classic would be Hogue rubber round to square conversion with silver S&W emblems.

In the condition you describe I would go $900-1000

Sorry about the typo in the title. 5" 629-3 Factory rubber grips. No internal lock. Although the 6" (6.5"?) -3 next to it did have the lock. I didn't look at the one with the longer tube much as it it had the IL plus I still have my 6" -1 I bought new many years ago, although it is pretty tired.

I have one of those critters!! Great gun, that one sounds like it's hardly been used. I would consider that a very reasonable price. I paid about $350 for mine but that was around 1995! I really like the fluted cylinder and the black powder bevels on the front of the cylinder. If you can find the money, I don't think you will be disappointed. (the lock first appeared on the -6 model of 629)

Here's mine. Paid $900 way back in 2015, so $1,100 doesn't seem terrible. I like the 1990's to early 2000's 5" N frames. Along with this 629-3 I have a 5" 27-5, a somewhat rare 625-5 Model of 1989 .45 Colt Stainless Stocking Dealer Special, and a 5" 627-5 .357 Mag-8 Times Performance Center (yes, it has the pimple but it's a smooth shooter!)

I am a fan of the 5" Full Lugg N-frames though I do not own one in 44 Magnum I have to agree that is a fair price

I do happen to own one of those 5" revolvers in 45 Long Colt

The Holiday season has often let many a good deal get past folks that would love to acquire it.

The solution for your dilemma is to put the Firearm on a Lay-a-Way

A more affordable amount of money saves the firearm for you until your cash flow improves in the New Year

I see the 5" 629-3 and -4s usually running between $1200 and $1300. A year ago I got lucky and snagged this one with factory Hogues for $825. Wish my 5" 610 no dash and other 5" N frames were that cheap. :D

The "five" inch revolvers have always had that sweet balance for point shooting. At least for me. That said, I've found it difficult not to justify those shorter or longer,,,
My -3 Five" with her much older sister "New Century"

It seems like many like us have that 5" sweet spot preference though I don't mind 4" either :-)

I agree, 4" and longer should be square SBs. But with conversion grips I guess it isn't a deal breaker. Aesthetically I'd prefer to do without the full underlug too. While I love the 686 that's one thing I don't like about them either. If I thought I could do a decent job of it I'd bubba it off of mine.

I thought about having my full lug converted to the standard configuration also. I guess not that big of a deal
