Two or more, that is.;)

The recent deals on Model 10s made me think of several occasions when I bought a gun in similar circumstances and later wished I had bought two of them, or maybe even more.

Most of us oldsters remember when we could buy a nickeled Model 36 for $150 OTD at the local hardware store. That isn't what I'm talking about. I can afford a new j-frame at current prices easier than I could afford the $150 ones way back then. What I'm talking about is a time I could have bought a couple of copies of a gun without breaking the bank, but just bought one, or in some cases, none at all.

The best personal example I can think of was when the SKS rifles were all the rage. I guess this was in the late 80s. The cheapest I can remember them at my local shop was $69.95. I was on a teacher's salary then, and that was before the big raises we got from Zell Miller, but I could have bought three or four of those rifles over a six month period. I bought one, and traded it off. I just wasn't that interested in them. Now, I have two. I paid $275 for a Yugo and 600 rounds of Wolf ammo just before the election in 2008, and thought I got a bargain. I bet there are two thousand (literally) of those rifles stuck back in closets, at the bottom of truck tool boxes, behind truck seats, and lying on shelves in barns just in my rural county. I know folks who probably bought a dozen of them.

In the early 90s, probably about 91 or 92, the Norinco "Model of The 1911" clones became available. I had decided I needed another .45 acp 1911A1. My good friend at the gunshop recommended the Nork. I still didn't have all that much disposable income, but the Norks were relatively cheap, and I have excellent credit at that store. I should have got two. If I had realized what a bargain they were, and what good quality the Chinese 1911s were, I would have. The jury was still out on them then, though. According to information on The 1911 Forum, the Norks first were available in 90/91, and Clinton issued his executive order banning import of Chinese handguns in 1995, so they weren't available all that long. I wish I had bought two of them.

About five or six years ago, the same gunshop from the first two examples got in about a dozen police riot shotguns on a trade with a South Georgia Sheriff's department. They had Smith&Wessons, Remington 870s, and Hi-Standards. They were asking $185 for the Remingtons. I bought one of the Hi-Standards for $145. It was banged up and had a little rust, but it functioned flawlessly. There was another HS and several 870s that looked fair, and I flirted with the idea of getting another one, but decided against it. I wish I had bought another one now, just to keep in the barn. I doubt if that deal will come along again.

To end on a happier note, right after Christmas in 2007, my same friend who works at the gun shop called me and told me that someone had traded two Model-10s, and did I want them. I told him to put them back and I would look at them the next day. What he had was a five-screw M&P from 1948 (my birth year) and a 10-7. The M&P was in about 85% shape, and the 10-7 was a pinned model, in about 90% condition. He wanted $250 for the five-screw and $200 for the 10-7. I looked at them, and knowing I was running short of funds right after Christmas, I told him I would take the five-screw. I got to the truck with the M&P, sat there for a minute, said "shucks" (or something similar), went back in the store and told them I would take the 10-5 too. The girl doing the paperwork, one of my students, said, "We knew you were coming back."

I guess I have gotten more predictable in my old age.

I own 2(or more)of all my favorite guns, like they say......if you find something you like, buy 2 as it likely wont be made anymore when you want another(or something like that)

for years I also had pairs of Land Cruisers, one of each model........guns much easier to store and take care of ;)

while I did buy 2x HK 94's, I had the chance to buy 30 others, I do wish I had at 2K each(just a few years ago)

NIB Glock 22's for $299, didnt buy any, passed on 130 to others......guess what I am not a lover of? ;)

HK 9mm compacts, NIB $499, only bought one, this was just a few months back.

Rem 870 PM ec DOC guns, many were new, only got one for $180, but my buddies got some so thats all good

Sometime around 1995 I had the chance to buy as many ex-FBI 1076s as I wanted for $300 each, which included night sights, box, and a couple of magazines. I had an FFL at the time so I ordered a pallet of them for various cops and agents, but only kept one for myself. I wound up selling that one, so now I am 1076less.

I was in New Orleans at the time, so if you encounter a 1076 in that area there is a better than average chance its an ex feebie gun. I don't remember exactly how many I got, but I know I had to get a handtruck to bring them into the office, and I had to make two trips.

Many years ago I bought this browning 92 .44 mag. Alongside it in the rack was one in .357. I have been looking for another in .357 ever since!

I remember in the early 1990s the new red fiberglass stocked SKS rifles for $59.95 at a gunshow, and I traded a worn out Webley pellet pistol and 10 bucks for one. Late 1980s I bought a Colt Ar-15 with the triangular handguard and skinny barrel new for $ 379, but of course, my biggest regrets are all the cheap Smith revolvers 10 years ago.

I should have bought a couple more versions of the 9422 Winchester. They shoot very well, has become my favorite rifle...but now they are too darn expensive!

I tried to buy some of those M-10s, but I was too late. I was going to buy four for myself and one for my FFL friend. He was going to pay me for the gun and do the transfer free if I could get him that great deal.

I paid too much for my SKS (Norinco), but it was brand new, covered in cosmoline, in the box. At $129, I should have bought a few more. I passed on a pair of M-65s a couple of weeks ago. Marked $250 each, but Sunday afternoon at the gun show, I think I could have taken both for $450, but I didn't.

Back in the late 60's the Colt SAA and the Colt Python could both be had for $125 brand new. Wish I had bought even one that I still had today. Smith's were quite a bargain as I recall but don't remember the exact price for any.

With the odd exception, most of what I have are variation on basic themes:
K frame size S&Ws/Rugers, Blackhawks/SAs, M1s. If I pruned them down (which I probably will some day) I'd be just fine.

Maybe it's just the idea of getting the perfect whatever. Truth is that good enough is good enough.

I wish I'd have bought at least two M1 carbines when the gun show tables were filled with them for $150 each.
I wish I'd have bought at least two new Norinco SKS's at $59 a piece.
I wish I'd have bought trruckloads of ammo at twenty years ago prices.

I've never done it before, but when Stoddards Gun & Tactical gave me a good price on 2 NIB Colt New Agents, I bought them. I sort of look at my guns as part of my 401k.

yep...i purchased a new in the box russian SKS for $90.00...it shoots great....still have it but wish i had grabbed another dozen
about 15 years ago my PD sold all of the ruger secutity six models we had in 2"and4" for $65.00 each...sigh...wish i had grabbed a few..i did however buy a colt offical police 4" circa 1941 for $50.00!

I wish I'd bought two M-16's in the early 90's. I bought one and paid 3400, sold it for four times that last year.

Talk about retirement money, I shoulda' bought twenty!

Back in the early eighties a gun shop that I used to do business with had a sheriff's dept. turn in of '97 winchester trench guns.A whole rack of them solid and take down versions. If I only would have seen the future.

I don't want to talk about it!!:o It would just make me cry.

I wish I'd bought a couple of thoae 1991A1 colts years back, I wish I'd bought that nickle model 17 (one of 15 ever made) for $479.00 at the Patterson Gunshow years back. There's lots of them I wish I'd bought. :( I also wish I hadn't sold off at various times the three pristine .22 Colt Diamondback's I've owned over the years, the list goes on..........

I bought a lot of guns roughly 1960 to 1990. All have went up a lot. However for me, it probley was just as hard to shell out $200 back then as it is $1,000 now!
I am untalented as you can find. I have no skills, no athletic prowlness, and no degrees. Absolutly nothing to brag about. Uglier than hell too! Just a fat old ugly man. Yet there is one lone thing I have always been good at through the years! That is this: Every gun or motor vehicle I ever wanted has become a major hunted classic, far outpaceing its original value compared to competeing same class type guns or vehicles! Had I tried harder to buy more of everything that I did, I would be a rich man!

I know we all have our stories and mine was in the early '90's. I lived in a large city and the two biggest gun stores in the area got into a price war. It got so bad one of them had a blow-out 48 hour sale on Colt and S&W revolvers. When I got to the store all he had left was 686's with 2 1/2 bbls. at way below his cost for $189.00! I grabbed one but sold it a few years later and have always missed it. I sure wish I would have grabbed two!
