Gunsmoke

Someone could easily look all this up and get the exact dates if they wanted to, but in the last week or so I'm pretty sure they showed the last "Chester" episode and the first "Festus" segment on whatever channel "Gunsmoke" is broadcast on.

I say this because they show the episodes in chronological order and I happened to glance at 1962 dates in the program notes.

I never cared for Chester and I often looked to see which leg had a stiffy. I never liked watching him on the show Mc Cloud either.
Festus was a real character but he also was a tough and tumble hard guy when he needed to be. I felt he brought a lot to the show. LOL He brought a "LOT" to the show. That thar was a fun ee seen.

I liked the 'flavor'....

I liked the 'flavor' of the black and white shows. They did a great job with the stories in the full hour format but as the years went by the flavor went from 'gritty' to 'cosmopolitan'. Still a great show, though. Like I said, I used to love Bonanza, but they've worn thin, while Gunsmoke just goes on and on.

Also, for some reason, 'The Rifleman' never seems to get old. I think that's thanks to Chuck Connors, who seemed to have an aura around him.

I used to think 'The Rebel' was good when I was a kid, too. Until I realized that they were making a 'pretty boy' "Rebel Without A Cause" in the west. I liked Nick Adams more in the 'Outer Limits' episode "Fun and Games". One Rebel episode that sticks in my mind is where the crazy old guy started laughing like a banshee and when he moved out of the way the window was full of Indians with their weapons pointing at them.

The"Wanted-Dead or Alives' are good and McQueen was a great actor, but his choice of weaponry seemed wrong for the mission.

I always appreciated the fact that Matt Dillon always took the high road, an excellent model for a young man that spent his entire adult life as an LEO.

I always enjoyed Ken Curtis too (as Festus Hagen) although he played other characters in a few earlier episodes of Gunsmoke. I enjoyed his interaction with Doc Adams too.

Glenn Strange (Sam) was another great supporting actor (funny how many stage coaches he drove in other Westerns).

BTW, Ken Curtis had a beautiful singing voice.

We have a statue of Ken Curtis in old downtown Clovis, CA. He was a longtime former resident.
