Lady Koz and I went to a small Christmas party today. The host is a younger, single female with 6 Great Danes. Her sister was visiting from Minneapolis. We were all sitting around chatting mostly about pets and neighbors. I don't know how the sister got there, but all of a sudden she said "most people end up shooting themselves when they try to defend themselves with guns".

I kept my cool and told her I was a big proponent of the 2nd Amendment and closely follow gun altercations around the country and don't recall coming across that stat. I politely asked her where she got that bit of information because I read many stories of people successfully using guns to defend themselves, loved ones and property and don't recall the last time I heard of anyone shooting themselves during a self defense situation. She had nothin'.

I asked her if improper and unsafe use of guns by some should limit the rights of those who safely handle guns daily, shoot 1000's of rounds a year and train for those situations. She said of course, it's the only way to protect people". But who besides cops handle guns every day and shoot that much? I told her I handle guns several times a day, most every day and shoot many thousands of rounds every year.

I knew she wanted to ask if I had a gun on me (M60 IWB, speed loader in my pocket) but she thought better of it. Well that and her foot was still in her mouth. I offered no further information. I looked at my wife as she smiled and tapped her purse telling me that her Shield was in there as well.

I said: "You know thousands of people get behind the wheel of their car and slide on the ice into other cars and into ditches. I can provide you with stats on them hurting or even killing themselves and others. Do we need to restrict them from driving"? Again nothing.

Someone quickly changed the subject and started talking about how nice their Christmas tree was decorated. The anti said she looks forward to decorating her tree every year and how this year she got to decorate two trees (including her sister's). In the very next sentence she (with no apparent coherent lead in) stated that she was an atheist. I literally thought my head was going to explode!

My wife suggested we needed to go home to walk and feed the dog. We said our good-byes and proceeded home in total amazement.

They walk among us AND THEY VOTE!

Nice job of handling the discussion. I am with you..no more unchallenged stupid statements against our freedoms.

What guides some of these goofs decision making is beyond me. It makes absolutely no sense to me. Let me rephrase...it makes no sense at all!

Or you coulda' said, "most people end up embarrassing themselves when they say stupid **** about subjects they know nothing of."

On the other hand, that might not have went well either.:)

but maybe it would have gone over well.

6 great danes in the same house? btw, the atheist was an idiot.

If only calmly stated facts worked with politicians. If even asking them why they voted the way they did would get a logical answer.

There are basically two types of human minds.

The "I know that" type that depends on memory. They are the ones that the biased media is preaching to with the plan of "even if it is a lie, if I say it often enough & loud enough, people will believe".

The "lets analyze this" type that uses deductive reasoning. They are the ones that question facts that seem far fetched. I believe it was Mark Twain that said "the majority of statistics are made up on the spot".

For those that are parroting 'anti' propaganda, the label 'stupid' doesn't fit as well as gullible, opinionated, or last but not least, LIARS.

Unfortunately, she is not alone and she probably read it on the internet.

The next time that you encounter one of the misinformed, ask them if they know the statistics on the number of folks killed in the USA each year by drunk drivers?

According to national statistics, there were over 10,000 citizens killed by drunk drivers every year over the last few years.

If you divide 10,000 by 365 (days in the year) it comes out to 27 deaths every day of the year. That means it is equal to the number of souls lost in the Sandy Hook shooting each and every day of the year.

Where is the outrage? Where are the pols calling for stiffer sentences or outlawing cars and alcohol.

The problem is that most folks like to drink and most folks like to drive. You will never get them to agree to eliminating booze or cars. It's just because firearms are not universally used by all and therefore are no loss to the uninitiated.

Our only hope is to increase our ranks. Teach a woman to shoot, take a kid to the range. Support the NRA, it's our only hope....

There's one of those at most parties. Since it would be detrimental to our cause to harm them I suppose we must suffer them. But generally speaking, in my opinion when it come to supporting the 2nd amendment and, indeed, the entire constitution and bill of rights, if your aren't part of the solution then you are part of the problem.
