I was at community orchestra rehearsal last night in downtown Billings, going to my car after rehearsal was done. Was putting my trumpet (worth over 2,000) in the back seat when three scum bags approached me from behind me and said " give me the bag and no one gets hurt" I slowly turned around and said to them " I'll give you my wallet instead" to which he said "Even better"

I then drew my S&W 3913 and told them to leave now and no one gets hurt!" They all jack rabbited down 3rd ave. N faster than an Olympic sprinter yelling at each other to get the hell out of here.

The one that spoke to me had his hand in his pocket like he had a weapon of some sort. The three were all Native Americans most likely from Crow Agency.

I could have tried to hold them for LEO's but as fast as they bolted that wasn't going to happen. Called 911 and gave them a description of the three. Told them that I had drawn my sidearm and that I am a CCW holder and was in fear of my life. No shots were fired, just presented and knew that if I had to I could and would fire.

Have no idea if they were apprehended or not...if they were I would think that LEO's would contact me for a written statement.

You NEVER know when it will be needed....SO....carry early and often!

Very good!!!!!!!!!!
And no one got hurt!
Good thing you had your insurance policy with you!

What was interesting to me was how calm and deliberate I was during this very brief encounter. Nice to know that all of my years of training kicked in.

These guys were only about 6 feet away and I was with my back between the door and the opening of the door with NO place to go. I was so screwed. the other thing is that it was a well lit area and I did not see them...they must have been using another car as a shield.

This is the third episode of having to draw to defend myself....fortunately I didn't have to fire in any of them.

All's well that ends well!

I'm impressed you could stay so cool under pressure. Good think they ran and didn't cause a problem, like move towards you, get shot, start bleeding, police and ambulance come, you get questioned, they swear they were just asking for directions and you freaked out, three against one stories, you hire a lawyer, ...

Nope, running away screaming is a good outcome!!! ;)

Well done. Especially NOT holding them at gunpoint and quickly dialing 911, when first able.

We (DAI and LE) hold the belief that the first one to dial 911 will usually be known thereafter as "the victim". ;)

I'm glad that this unfortunate incident worked out well for you and you are OK and unharmed. Best regards, 18DAI

Glad you're okay and nobody got hurt. I had a somewhat similar experience outside a hospital emergency room and posted here a couple of months ago.

That's as accurate and reliable as saying the world is flat because you don't know otherwise.

Most BGs who manage to get away without being perforated will consider it a good day and leave it at that. They try to rob someone and then call the cops to report it? That's about as bright as calling the cops after you get ripped off in a drug deal.

Maybe you should seek the truth rather than go with the first call in.

SMART people don't commit armed robberies in the first place.

Bystanders, including malicious ones, report things that didn't happen, or happen in the way they say. What are you going to do, shoot the witnesses? No witnesses? Can you be SURE, 100%?

If I have to use a gun, I'm going to report it, at least if reasonably possible.

The only time I've ever had to use a gun in self-defense, I didn't report it. We were in the middle of nowhere, cell phones were science fiction for normal people, and we wouldn't have even known where to go to report the attack.

Today, I would have reported it... if I had a cell signal.

Police and reports are purely after the fact. They won't prevent harm before the fact. They can definitely prevent it afterward.

A gun is like a parachute...if you need one and don't have one, chances are there won't be another time when you will need one.

Been in your situation a few years ago. Most punks don't expect a sheep to have teeth!

I'm sorry to hear these guys were from the Crow Agency. I study 19th century history of the Plains tribes, and would like to think better behavior was typical of noble people. That said, Lewis and Clark had a hard time holding on to anything that wasn't nailed down as they worked their way back up the Columbia. Maybe it was 'cultural/material opportunism,' but there's no excuse now. Theft is theft and thugs are thugs.

"bed bugs from the res" wasn't really necessary. They might have been from my Norwegian grandmother's house.

So glad that despite the possibility of bad things happening (and to an extent they did) it ended well enough.

As a woman consultant that often travels and is frequently out past 8-9 PM at meetings and dinners, I've had one very dangerous moment and several that I was more than casually uncomfortable with.

I'm now learning to shoot and taking tactical training and am seriously considering CCW.

Take good care and WELL DONE!

SMsgt always has something in the negative to say when someone posts a story about drawing his/her weapon. (I assume Smsgt is NOT in LE)
OLDCOP had a story several months ago and SMsgt had an issue with OLDCOP pulling his weapon. I assume OLDCOP didnt become an OLDCOP because he was ignorant during his LE years. He obviously used his training and gut instinct (Hair on the back of his neck rose) to deterimine there was going to be a potential bad encounter. If I recall correctly he was at a Hospital emergency room enterance (0300 hrs i believe) and was approached by what he believed was a thug (Street Cop 101 at its best) Also I believe OLDCOP is slightly handicapped and walks with a cane? which unfortunatley makes him an easy target for those scum bags that do not have the chops to try this on a younger healthier person. So OLDCOP did what he does best, detect trouble before trouble happens.
OLDCOP is an OLDCOP because he was a smart cop
i meant to send this out whenOLDCOP posted his story but the thread was closed

OLDCOP I hope i was not offensive to you during my rant here. If so i apologize and that was not my Intent.

Third time?! Yikes...

All the times I've drawn my concealed carry have been because of 4 legged threats.

Sorry to hear you were placed in that situation in the first place Growr, but what can you expect from a bottom feeder ... which is all a criminal is.

I live between the Blackfoot and the Chippewa-Cree in NC Montana. What resevation life has done to these fine people breaks my heart.

We say up here (some of us) "Want to know what The Government Taking Care of You looks like? Visit a reservation."

I've played High School football across from and gotten to know some of these good, young people -- only to see the reservation take its toll a few years later -- at least usually ------ but thankfully not always.

PS: Glad the OP is okay and no one got hurt. Billings is usually second only to Great Falls in crime rate per 1,000 (in Montana).

Larry from Bend...

I lived in Great Falls for 20 years and am well acquainted with the crime rates there as well. One of my three incidents I mentioned earlier was in GTF in 1999 also involving a Native American...sort of on the bizarre side.....

Glad everything turned out alright. Hopefully they will get caught before someone gets hurt.

Very strange how many posts had to be deleted in this thread because they were political commentary or leaned toward racial insults.

Oh well, we can lock 'em any time you don't want to follow the rules.......;)
