I have an older (around 1985) SW 586 which has had some parts gold plated by the previous owner. The hammer apparently rubs against the side plate as the gold plating is "scuffed up" on that side. I read somewhere about using bushings or washers (possibly nylon) to move the hammer more towards the center of the hammer grove thus eliminating any touching of the hammer to the side plate. I looked at the Brownells site but couldn't find anything. Can anyone offer any assistance or advice? Thanks

Appears to be a plastic washer. I had to make a friction resistant washer between the hour hand and the porcelain dial on an antique clock. You could use an expired credit card, drivers license or maybe a plastic business card. Use a pair of scissors and cutout a plastic washer.

Have seen this before, I just would shone the offending side plate. JMHO

That's how I do it too, unless the hammer can be clearly seen off center. You wouldn't believe how many new SW's have the hammer rub problem.Have seen this before, I just would stone the offending side plate. JMHO

Sure does and that surprises me. The .002" washers for cylinder end shake as well as the yoke washers are stainless steel. Hmm.
I believe the Power hammer shims are 302 Stainless... but in case they changed, here's a source for stainless shims for S&W and others:

This was a common problem in the older guns(60s, 70, 80s) when doing a trigger job on these revolvers. Brownells sold .002" shim stock washers for both the trigger and the hammer(different dia.)! Care must be used when placing these in a gun! If too many are used the hammer/trigger will bind, the credit card idea is too thick! The most I have ever used on a gun is 2 per side on a hammer! The idea is to have the hammer/trigger move side to side(slightly) but not touch either side! If you are building a gaming gun with a 7-8lb DA pull you will notice this "side plate drag" and/or hammer/trigger binding!

The stainless steel ones sound best to me. I only mentioned the plastic ones since that appears to be what Midway is offering.
I guess since the thickness in mentioned for the stainless steel bushing, you could also check Home Depot or Lowes. I would probably just order them since it is 30 miles round trip for me to the nearest store.
