Handgun Permit waiting time

Here in small town Ohio I turned the paperwork for my CHL(concealed handgun license) into the local sheriff's dept. at 3:00pm on a Thursday(just before the issuing office closed for the day) and picked it up at 9:15am the next day.

Here in Oregon permits are issued by county sheriff's offices. I applied for a renewal in August and got my renewed permit in October. I moved to a different county late last year, and applied in January for a permit issued by my new county.

Earliest appointment I could get was for early June.

The good news is my old county's permit remains valid until then, at which point the remaining years of validity on my old county's permit will be transferred to my new county's permit.

My wife's renewal, here in the "Gunshine" state of Florida, took almost 4 months. Lots of services are slowing down for a number of reasonable causes. And then again, some are slowing down for no reasonable cause at all......

We don't have handgun permits in Florida. I would guess you are talking about concealed carry permit renewal. If so it can be done well ahead of time online. Where I am in Florida we can make a appointment and go to the tax collectors office and have the renewal in about 10 minutes.

I will bet that you mailed it off

Florida is a SHALLL ISSUE State.

If they can not find anything wrong in your background in 90 days they "SHALL ISSUE" the Concealed Weapons Permit

As SMSgt mentions above, renewals are under 30 minutes at one of the Department of Agriculture's regional offices. Unfortunately there are only seven of those regional offices across our rather large State

Now many of the Tax Collector's Offices in our 67 Counties will also process new permits and renewals.

In my last renewal, the longest wait I had was the printer printing my renewed permit with my new picture on it.

Conversely, if you are an idiot like me and let your permit lapse for six months, you have to reapply.

Applications are supposed to take 90 days or less. Mine was finally marked approved at about 95 days, but two weeks later I'm still waiting for my permit.

In IL it may take up to 6 months and still waiting (The State is being sued for failure to follow the rules they made). This is since Covid, previously it normally was 60-90 days once training had been completed and all paperwork downloaded.

My renewal was in process when COVID hit. It took a little longer than anticipated, but all things considered it was not bad considering the Assembly looted the fund and thousands were discovering gun ownership. On the other hand I got an unsolicited replacement FOID card last week. Has the same expiration date as the old one, but the picture was updated using my DL photo.

Here in PA

Here in Berks County PA my last renewal took under 30 minutes from the time I left my driveway until I got home. Everything is filled out beforehand and I do live about 3 miles from a Sheriffs substation at the Reading Airport.
We used to have to go to the court house in the **** hole that is Reading.
I just received a reminder I am due again and it has a QR code to scan and fill out info. With the scamdemic I think I now have to make an appointment.

Mine took 10 weeks, but I live in a gun friendly county, well for NY anyway.

NY has 6 months,by law, to give a decision.

In NY every county can do it their way as long as they stay within the parameters of the state Pistol Permit system.

Depending on circumstances it can go from a few weeks till infinity. Some judges and County Clerks like to "consider" things to death. That also goes for a unrestricted permit to plenty of restrictions.

I know it was a long time back and things have got better but back in the late 60s when I first tried to get a permit in a upstate bad city/county it took over 2 years and I ended up moving to a more friendly place to get it.

I sent in my out of state renewal Florida paper work, including new picture and print card about 8 weeks ago. I got back my return receipt requested card in good time. Possibly in a couple more months I will get it. My old permit still has some life left!:D

Has never taken a week here. Drop a filled out page of paper off at the sheriffs office and usually in 4-5 days they call me and tell me it is ready. Go in, hand them the check, sign the card, they laminate itt with my old photo and away I go. Now I only need a permit for out of state travel and skipping the phone call at the FFL

Handgun Permits are supposed to be approved or denied in NC in 14 days if possible. I'm on day 50 and am still in the "assigned to processor shortly" stage. The next stage is "pending ".
I know these are crazy times, but this is a bit much.
I'm only in this position because I'm giving both of my sons a Sig P226. We had a great sheriff for many years but he lost the election to an opponent promising to not work with ICE.
Anyway, what are your wait times for handgun permits in other cities?

Just be happy this is a "shall issue" state. Is this your first CWP, or is it a renewal? My renewal last year (4th renewal after initial issue) took from mid-August until Jan 5th of this year. To the county's credit, they extended my next expiration date by two months (NC is a 5 year permit). Initial issues are typically taking longer. COVID and the suspension of the in-person renewals, plus the 30+ per cent increase of new CWP applications, has slowed the entire process to a crawl.

Or, on reflection, are you talking about a permit to purchase a handgun? I suppose that's as backed up, or more so, than CWP applications, because of the in-depth background checks. Those checks are also done for an initial CWP, but renewals only search during the time period since last renewal and don't take as long. If you plan to be a gun owner in NC, it's worthwhile to get your CWP; you use it as a purchase permit once you have it, no waiting. I call it my "Cash and Carry" permit.

in Butler co. in western Pa. first time it takes about 1 hr.(sheriff wants to talk to you about do's and don'ts) after that only takes about 15-30 min.(depending on how many people are there) permit is good for 5 yrs. and they will notify you 6 mo. before your permit expires.

Last time I renewed here in Oregon, it took a few minutes. I recently renewed my Washington permit, and it took about six weeks.

Fortunately, in my state of residence we don't have "permits" we have Concealed Carry Licenses, and getting one is as easy as going to the local Sheriff's Department or County Courthouse, fill out some basic paperwork that just about anyone could fill out with their eyes closed, hand a receptionist $20, smile for a photo, wait a few seconds for them to print it out, then walk out the door with card in hand.

I wish that Constitutional Carry would come to my state, but unfortunately the current state legislators wouldn't have it, so this is probably as good as it gets, but nevertheless I'm grateful for it since obviously others have it worse.

Personally, I feel that carry permits/licenses are an infringement on the Second Amendment, and that they should not exist. They're worthless too, because much like Drivers License, they don't ensure that those who hold them will follow the rules, so all it really does is make it harder for responsible gun owners to defend themselves.

In North Carolina, it is unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation to sell, give away, transfer, purchase, or receive, at any place in the state, any pistol, unless the purchaser or receiver has first obtained a license or permit to receive such a pistol by the sheriff of the county where the purchaser or receiver resides, or the purchaser or receiver possesses a valid North Carolina issued concealed carry permit.[17

The OP never answered my question about who was trying to get a permit. If he is trying to get a permit to buy the pistols then his sons will need to get permits before he can give them the guns. It would be more simple for the sons to go get permits and buy the guns. Most people don't know the law that I posted above. Larry

Since the OP has not returned to comment, I'm not sure we yet know if he/she is talking about a permit to purchase or a carry permit. Thankfully, Missouri did away with the permit to purchase system North Carolina has with the introduction of concealed carry permits several years ago. Missouri's permit to purchase system was implemented in the early 1900's. The primary reason for implementation of the system by the state legislature can't be discussed on this forum, as it violates one of the cardinal rules. Suffice to say, it allowed the Sheriff cart blanche to make sure only the "right" people received purchase permits . . .
