Hangovers...

It was Sinatra that said, "I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day!"

On college drinking - our niece (now graduated) was part of a group that organized parties after a "big game." Typically, someone brought a "handle of gin" i.e. 1.5 liters, the "gin bucket" as it was called and 3-4 large bottles of a sweet soft drink - usually Sprite or the like. I got a headache just listening to her describe it.

Funny thing though was that on that same PC College campus, you could not buy a Pepsi or Coke that had caffeine in it.

from the emergency room, they had her there hooked up to an I.V.

1000cc Ringers lactate is the best cure for a hangover(and other maladies) ever.
I have fixed many firefighters with a 18ga catheter and a bag RL I.V. wide open.It is the preferred remedy for dehydrated athletes.

Watch the Tylenol, combined with alcohol, causes liver damage.

Excellent advice. Stay away from Tylenol or anything that includes the main ingredient in same. I'm surprised that crap is still on the OTC market. If you've got the presence of mind take Alca Seltzer before bedtime on the night of the crime.

I don't over-drink anymore. However as I remember the only sure fire 'cure' for a hangover is time.

Haveing somthing to eat and a lot of water/juice/Gatoraide/whatever will make you feel a little better. A Bloody Mary helps too. (if you quit after one) Don't like vodka? I don't either. Tequila makes a dandy Bloody Maria!

I don't like hearing that Tylenol combined with alcohol is bad for you. Because "Ny Quil"is the only cold medicine that does anything to make me feel better at night when I have a cold. And it is basicly a combo of just that. (Tylenol & alcohol)

The cure to a hangover is simple. Etoh inhibits the hormone ADH(antidiaretic hormone) which keeps the fluids in your body at a balance. A hang over much like the flu dehydrates you meaning you lose many electrolytes and causes the nausea. Replacing the electrolytes with gatorade will offset the lose of the fluids. tylenol will buffer the head ache til the fluids are replaced. Want to drink more? Eat a fatty meal before hand and the oils will prevent the absorbtion of the etoh. That is if you just like the taste if not be a cheap drunk like me. After about 3 beers I'll go home with anybody. One good thing I heard about drinking is that it keeps the liver in check to take toxins out of your body like anethesia after surgery. One thing about a drunks and druggies they just won't die they seem to live forever. Some of you may even know people that were t totaliers and quit and lived to be old as the the dirt. Doeboy

When I would have a hangover I would take a bag of hot pork rinds and pour a half bottle of tabasco on them. I would put two long neck Buds on the table and not take a sip until I ate all the pork rinds. Then I would slam the two beers and no more hangover. I haven't had a drink since '97 but I still love them hot pork rinds.

I'm thinking some of the cures for hangovers here might just be cures for drinking.
yuck.puke and call me in the afterlife.

Never had one , back in my binge drinking days if I could get to sleep without the bed going into autorotation mode I woke up feeling all bright and spiffy. Annoyed the hell out of my friends. The rotating bed was only a problem with tequila , waaay too much tequila. Oddly even though I was somewhat immune to the worst of the effects ,I lost the urge for drinking in my early/mid 20's and haven't had more than 10 or 12 drinks a year in 25 years.

I'll chime in with those that say the best cure for a hangover is simply not to drink. The primary ingredient in booze is ethyl alcohol which is a poison. That's why you feel good/woozey/sick. You've been poisoned. That's why they call it intoxicated.

But to prevent the hangover, you have to prevent the dehydration. (That's one of the things the poison does, viz. robs your body of vital fluid.)

I knew some docs who would binge drink and give themselves IVs. If you just drink a glass of water with every drink, I guess it would be the same.

Back when I was welding storage tanks there was a woman who weighed about 100 pounds welding in the same shop. She drank a lot, and she came in with a hangover she would have a big cup of ice water, the proceed to turn on her oxygen bottle of the torch kit and sit there and snort industrial grade oxygen. She said it worked and she seemed to do alright with it.
