4 or 5 years ago I bought a new weed eater. Before that I had in the past had a gas model but got tired of fooling with it and mixing gas and 2-stroke oil and keeping it tuned up etc so I went to the battery powered model. It was okay but didn't have the power the old gas burner had. And eventually the 18 volt batteries began to fade. For the last 2 years I've been nursing them and they have been getting weaker and weaker and losing their ability to hold a charge. My BIL gave me one but soon it too just wasn't makin' it.
So the other day I bought 2 new 18 volt batteries (about 65 or 70 bux after tax) and 20 bux worth of line for the old Black and Decker. I loaded up some new line and put in a freshly charged new battery and commenced to weed eating. Got about 20' and it went belly up.
I fiddled with it a while and then I had to face the fact that I just wasted nearly 100 bux on a busted weed eater. After making up a few new swear words I calmed down and tried to figure a way to make the best of this bad situation. I went to 3 Walmarts, Home Depot, and Lowes. What I learned was that NOBODY makes an 18 volt weed eater any more. That figures....
My next option was to find a 20 volt (what every one is making this year) that had some of the features I wanted. Auto line feed, convertible to edger, etc. But what I learned is that the batteries and the charger are extra and none of them use the kind of line I have a years supply of.
The last place I looked was as Lowe's. I walked out and sat in my truck waiting for inspiration to take me. Finally I received a revelation. Bells were ringing and a choir was singing in the back ground. I was bathed in a warm bright light. I decided that I was done with the weak***, pain in the *** battery model too. I have a 100' extension chord that will just reach my back fence and both side fences from the outlet I had installed on the back of the house during the remodel in '15. After having used all 3 types I decided that the chorded kind was the least trouble and the easiest to use and keep it going.
I went back into lows and bought a 6.5 amp chorded model that had auto line feed and a curb wheel for edging. It also had a 14" cut and my old one only had an 8" cut. This thing is crazy powerful. It will cut down small trees and if you don't keep it moving it will dig a hole in the ground right in front of you. I had no idea a weed eater came with that kind of power. And as a bonus it uses the same line as my old battery powerd ***. If I ever get a foot or leg into that thing while it's running I'll be going to the ER for stitches. I mean it.
As far as the batteries go well, I do still have a leaf blower that uses the 18 volt so I'll keep one of them and my BIL gave me one a while back so I'll just give him the other one and then we'll be square.
Soooo after a day of stress, aggravation, and chasing my tail all over town I finally got my happy ending. Once again my life is now perfect.
