Hard Chromed Shield!

Yep nice job love that gun... only thing I would add (if they were even available yet) is a stainless Stormlake or KKM for a little less black. Guess one could polish the existing barrel for a lot less.

I do think I like that sight setup better than the standard 3 tube Ameriglo's I was planning on getting. Change of plan's lol.

weird two circles as well on slide 9mm shield

ok I just stumbled upon this post I have a brand new m&p shield 9mm with black box. and the seven round magazine still has the bump on it. anyways my new shield has those two circles you have on your gun. is this normal? how do those circles get there? and what caused those circles? I sent smith & Wesson a email with the photos of the gun & magazine. now should I ignore those circles? or take advantage of the lifetime warranty? the only thing is smith & Wesson usually shuts down the factory around this time of year.:( is this a quality control issue that their having don't mind all my questions because I emailed them with all those questions as well.

To the OP, great project, I hope it shoots as good as it looks. I put the 10-8 rear sights on two M&P .45s and am very pleased with the results.

Not sure where in AZ you are, but Robar in PHX has done great work for me and both their dark finish and NP3 stand up to AZ heat and dust.

Everyone stay safe

nacsmxer I just bought my new m&p9 shield it has the two circles like yours. is this a defect? im bringing my gun back to the gun store where I bought it & have him send it back to smith & Wesson to inspect it. I talked to jeff whitehouse at cs at smith & Wesson he told me they would have to refinish the slide or replace it. bad thing is they are shutting down the factory so I wont see it till September or beginning of October. next time im going to bring my glasses with me when I buy a new smith & Wesson. :( serial #htk****

It is not a defect, all I have seen have them.

Mine has them, and I'd say that they're fairly noticeable when viewed in the right light. They look like marks from where a jig might have held the slide during production. There's also a "ghost circle" centered on the rear of the extractor. These appear to be cosmetic in nature. My serial is HTMxxxx as I recall.

Beautiful gun! Bob Cogan does great work, I'm going to send him my Wolf & Klar 44sp for a refinish and have him check the mechanicals.

update:

brought back my shield back to the gun store where I bought it he is sending it back to smith & Wesson for the 3 circles on the slide. ps: smith & Wesson said the bump or dimple shouldn't be on my 7 round magazine. so I brought everything back box & all included.

I like it! I am going to strip my full sized .40 down to the stainless and have a satin bead blast done to it. I have the triji night sights on mine, but I do like that sight set up a lot.

Hard Chrome

Hi,
Here is a bit I have learned about Hard Chrome. I worked in the plating industry as a very young man, and still have friends in it.
First off, I believe it to be very best possible finish for a gun, Extremely high Rockwell Hardness figures of 68-72 are not hard to achieve which makes finish similar to a custom knife.
Anyway, the reason Bob Cogan is the MAN, when it comes to Hard Chrome.
Unlike Electro-less Nickel, which plates evenly wherever it "whets". Hard Chromes evenness of finish thickness is very dependent on Anodes that are built and sized, fit for each particular gun. This makes setup time consuming and expensive, especially first time a particular type of gun is done.
I have companies in my home town that are very good at Hard Chrome on an industrial level, but they will not mess with guns because they feel they will not do enough of each Model I believe.
As far as I know, Mr Cogan does virtually all the US firearms Hard Chrome work. That is a very good reference. Colt, STI, Keltec, virtually anyone who offers it.
Colt does it mostly through Custom Shop I believe, but STI for example uses it on lots of their weapons.
I have had STI guns with a lot of Heavy Competition miles , I have used a lot, and with a good cleaning one is hard pressed to see any wear.
Another nice feature is that it can be applied at a very thin level.

update:

well I told the dealer instead of returning my money back for him to order another m&p 9 shield but w/o the thumb safety. welp if it still has the ghost circles ill live with it.

Thanks again for the nice comments, fellas. I appreciate it. And thanks PattonTime, for the background info on APW Cogan. That is good to know!

The Shield is serving me well as an everyday carry piece. I still love everything I did to it and wouldn't change a thing. The hard chrome is wearing like iron and still looks like new. Upon presentation, the sight picture is "Right Now" and the Apex trigger makes shooting/accuracy an absolute delight.

Here's a few pics of my carry rigs. 1st is a custom made TT Gunleather "Mike's Special" IWB holster and mag pouch. The second holster is a custom made carbon fiber kydex IWB from Multiholsters.com. Both are absolute works of art in their own right. Oh, and the belt is also a custom from TT Gunleather. Amazing craftsmanship.
