I know there there has been much chatter on the dots committing suicide and jumping off of their hosts. Has Smith and Wesson corrected this issue on new production? Is their a specific time from which it has been corrected?

Nope. My front white dot flew off and S&W customer service was not at all helpful or interested in fixing the sight. I ended up painting my own dot with white enamel nail polish.

I did the same thing. Why would I want to send my Shield back to S&W and be without it 2 weeks or more, when all they would do is put a dot of paint in the front sight. I was able to do that in my garage in about 30 seconds.

My front white dot flew off my SD9VE as well, and that's what they told me to do, with either acrylic paint or white fingernail polish.

It just behooves me that S&W knows this is an issue albeit a small one that is probably easily corrected at little cost and does NOTHING? Really? Are we as consumers just supposed accept poor craftsmanship and pay top dollar for it and then go on about our business? I know it's petty but it swings both ways as it's not a huge deal to expect them to at least get this part right. JMHO, carry on!! John

John

S&W will do nothing until we the consumers say enough with our pocket book and that will not happen when they produce weapons like the Shield that are reliable and priced competitive.

The sight issue reminds me of a nice car with a lousy radio. Are you going to sell reliable transportation for a bad radio?

Buy a set of high quality night sights and you will be into your Shield about the same as an XDs 9mm.

Russ

I've got 100+ rounds through my Shield 9mm and still have all three white dots! Why don't we set up a record keeping page as to the most rounds fired through a Shield 40cal and 9mm without losing a white dot?
Ironically I'm waiting for the TruGlo TFO Shield specific night sights to emerge and then away go the factory white dots.
Why is it that the simplest problem to solve can be the most aggravating?

You know, I thought about what I said when I called, and I screwed up from the start. I said, "what can I do about it?" instead of what are you going to do about it. I may call back tomorrow with that question and see what happens. I agree, it's not that big of a deal, but I bought the Smith because of the support that I heard was top notch.

Mine came out between after 200.

I now have a Shield 9mm with 265rnds through it but i do full expect the front dot to come out like usual. My full size 9mm dot flew out in the first 150rnds in 2010 when i got it. I talk to the service dept about this and was truly surprised (shocked actually) when i received a full set of replacement sites in the mail in less than a week. That was 2010 though so 2013 my be a different service manager or something so your results may vary.

Why would they not just correct the problem, hell .... white glue? Instead of white paint? They would save on all the customer service calls and shipping out replacement sights. Just say'n. It's not rocket science. I know there are bigger issues large manufacturers encounter but hey, attack some low hanging fruit show the customers you are listening .... throw us a bone once in a while. It's not like I am asking for a better trigger system so I dont have to drop 150.00 on ( SMILE ) APEX components.

Perhaps S&W ought to "include" a small bottle of "Sight Paint" with each M&P. It would save on all the new sights, sight installation costs, and shipping costs.

On top of that, they could sell a kit of sight paints that includes the most popular/useful colors as an accessory. It may have been inadvertent, but they've certainly created a market for such a kit.

No, No, No ...... Don't include it?? They will eliminate a magazine (GRIN).

Talked to CS again today about my sight problem.

Asked the agent why Smith and Wesson is still having this problem that they have known about for awhile. The agent was taken aback and said that he is sure they are working on it, but has no direct knowledge of same. Right. And I have some ocean front property in Arizona.

Anyway, I told them that suggesting to me to fix their problem with nail polish wasn't good enough. They offered to let me send in the weapon for two weeks and they would install a new sight. Still not good enough. So they offered to send me a new sight. That should have been the first response. I then told them to keep the sight, but to fix the problem. I told them I bought the Smith because of what I heard was unmatched support, and I expected more out of them. Probably did not do much good, considering how well the Shield is selling. Oh well, at least I put in my two cents worth.

Or.... they could leave the dot depressions unpainted and sell an accessory paint kit for those that want contrasting sight dots. That's what the auto manufacturers would do. (mine fell out one by one and I replaced them with a liquid paper pen, no problems since then, maybe they should change their process to liquid paper)

Or Elmers glue ...... it's edible. ( Smile )
