Head cold...I'm dyin' up here!!

not a cold, a crappy sinus infection!! 3 times to a doctor, 2 scripts of antibiotics, now finishing up 2ed. script of steroids. antibiotics weren't working. sinus infection was so bad it wouldn't let the AB work. was down for 4 days, the infection came back again, been dealing w/ this for a month, inflamed lungs/ nasal passages/ head sinus swelling, also feeling like I rolled down a mountain, ^^^^ like others above these infections just are lasting long. talked to a worker at the drs. office, said they have never seen colds/ sinus infections lasting so long. only do musinex dm when I want some relief. dr. changed me over to musinex d. everyone have a good weekend, happy new year, spring only 4 months away.

My Grandfather was Narragansett Indian and my Grandmother used to make up some Indian remedies, you needed a strong constitution to get them down but they worked, when she died they went with her.

This is one of the worst colds I've ever had. Somebody out there must have a cure I haven't heard of.....maybe?:(

You have my sympathies.

I have some sort of cold/virus thing right now...for the first time since 2012.

Severe muscle/joint aches/pain with some nasal congestion. It isn't the flu, but it's one of those things that bring back childhood memories of mom taking care of me until our family doctor made a house call. Yes, doctors really did visit sick kids at their home.

Any other day like today...temperatures in the low forties with clear Carolina blue skies, I'd have been out in the woods with the dogs and my backpack. Today, it was all I could do to get out of bed, and that was after sleeping from 7:30 p.m. last night until noon today.

So I decided to bypass all the home remedies, all the old wives' concoctions and witches' brews, and go straight to my doctor. I don't have time to waste on pot luck "cures". But that's not sayin' I'd refuse to use some of that stuff my friend Rusty uses. Just so we're clear on that.

So I got an Rx for Phenergan with codeine. Yay! I will eat a bowl of soup, then take a hit of the medicine and hopefully sleep the whole thing off.

I have no problems taking something with opioids in it. Wish I had a couple bottles of the stuff.

Hope you get to feelin' better.

For me, being able to sleep it off is the key. If I get congested, I can't sleep, and can't recover.

Take whatever you need to that lets you sleep. NyQuil really helps me. I ignore the dosage instructions on the bottle, I usually need about double.

If you need something stronger, don't be shy about getting a prescription from the doc.

Granny Clampitt had a miracle cure for colds. It was basically corn mash white lightning and guaranteed it cured colds in about 14 days.
Anyone remember that episode? LOL
Seriously the ginger root tea with lemon and honey should kick the cold out into the cold. Ginger root tea stopped a stomach ache for me real quick. Ginger tea is reported to be a very good antibacterial tonic.

Thought I had a head cold ,was the flu and 6 days later I am still alive but it was touch and go at first!

With advances in medicine and development of stronger anti-viral drugs, lots of folks today don't take the flu as serious as some of us older guys.

My dad told me about going around with his mother as she went from house to house in Lancaster County, South Carolina, helping to wash and lay out the bodies of the people killed by the flu pandemic of 1918. He said as they rode down the streets and roads in their two-mule wagon, they could hear the crying and wailing of the victims' relatives, and see the fires and smell the smoke from their clothes and belongings being burned.

I simply can't imagine something like that.

That pandemic of 1918-19 killed more people than WWI...somewhere between 20 and 40 million souls worldwide. More people died from the flu in one year than in four years of the bubonic plague...the Black Death.

Flu still isn't anything you want to fool around with.

Antibiotics don't work on viral infections, but are frequently prescribed to prevent a bacterial infection from setting in. I just got over a real doozy about a week or so ago. I have found that I do better if I get up and follow my regular routine than if I lay around in bed. I did finally go to a "MedExpress" facility, and was probably almost over the cold by the time I went. As soon as I start to feel the symptoms, I start taking the WalMart (Equate) version of the "Emergen-C", which has 1000 mg of vitamin C, plus 7 B vitamins and some antioxidants, and electrolytes.

Just before bed, a couple of shots of Cognac and a spoon of honey provide a little relief also.

I try not to get colds in the first place. I'm a college professor, and have students from all over the world, and they go back and forth to their home countries, and frequently bring new strains of colds with them. I keep hand sanitizer ... GermX brand in the office, and at home, and in the car. Use it frequently when I think it is prudent. Watch opening doors and handling stuff in stores, to minimize catching the colds in the first place.

Best luck to you.

When you sneak across the border with your buddies things can happen. It helps to have a good doctor. My doctor is my friend but if I didnt have good insurance you are toast. I have seen it happen.:)

Headcold update

Start the day with a hot steamy shower.
Vitamin C : 3 grams three times a day.
Manzanilla tea...all day with lemons off my tree and honey
Steamer of 4 Thiefs oil several times a day...this helps a lot.
Chlorol hydrate and fenilifrene before bedtime.
Zinc tablets, B12 (methylcobalamine)
Protein powder in water...60 grams daily
Water all the rest of the time.

It's getting better, my friends that have it are not making much progress.
The neighbors' cat checks on me twice daily.

No food?
Is it starve a cold, feed a fever or the other way 'round?

This reminds me of one of my professors at Pharmacy college...he used to say: if you have a cold and take medicine you will get better in 7 days...if you have a cold and do NOT take any medicine you will get better in 1 week!

Hey Salty RI...are you by chance an RPh?

No not me but I do spend a lot of time in the Drug Store.
