Antibiotics don't work on viral infections, but are frequently prescribed to prevent a bacterial infection from setting in. I just got over a real doozy about a week or so ago. I have found that I do better if I get up and follow my regular routine than if I lay around in bed. I did finally go to a "MedExpress" facility, and was probably almost over the cold by the time I went. As soon as I start to feel the symptoms, I start taking the WalMart (Equate) version of the "Emergen-C", which has 1000 mg of vitamin C, plus 7 B vitamins and some antioxidants, and electrolytes.
Just before bed, a couple of shots of Cognac and a spoon of honey provide a little relief also.
I try not to get colds in the first place. I'm a college professor, and have students from all over the world, and they go back and forth to their home countries, and frequently bring new strains of colds with them. I keep hand sanitizer ... GermX brand in the office, and at home, and in the car. Use it frequently when I think it is prudent. Watch opening doors and handling stuff in stores, to minimize catching the colds in the first place.
Best luck to you.
