My modest collection of S&W Handguns.

Mod. 19-4 (Graduation present 1981 Police Academy), 340PD, and lastly ?

My question to you most knowledgeable souls. What do I got?

.32 Long CTG. 2 inch. No model number. All I know is that my Dad bought it for my mom, early 50's maybe. The box its in says Mod 49 Body Guard. Im sure that is not the correct box. Don't know where he purchased it from.

Welcome to the forum.

That's a beauty! You have a ".32 Hand Ejector - Model of 1953 New I frame" and it's a 3 screw from the 1956 to 1958 period. With a serial # I could pin down the shipping date a little closer for you. It's the final form of the I frame during the early post war evolutionary period. It became the Mod 30 after mid 1957 and became a Mod 30-1 when it was replaced with the J frame in Jan 1961.

These are very accurate and low recoil fun shooters.

Much more detail on it's confusing evolution thru the 1950s here if interested:

Hondo44 beat me to the punch and he gave about all the info anybody could ask for about the small frame 32s. All I can add is "Welcome to the S&W Forum!"

nice flat latch for sure! welcome aboard, you'll quickly find we ALL have a problem with the Smiths... you now, will too!

A mighty fine first post it was, too. Welcome!

Welcome to the Forum.

I like the 6" Combat Magnum with the Patridge front sight. A range session with that would be a pleasure. I don't often see these - perhaps others do.

And, of course, that is a lovely little .32 HE.

Congrats!!!

Thank you all for the warm welcome, and Hondo44 thank you for that information on my little .32. Ill get you the serial number as soon as I get home from work.

So I was born in 1956, my dad wanted my mom to have a gun because he was out to sea a lot. We'll have to see what the serial number reveals. I have only shot about 25 rounds through it, and that was in the 1970's. Other than that, I believe it went unfired.

Any idea as to what box it would have come in? The box I have is the blue cardboard one, and because its stamped "Mod 49" I don't think its the correct one. I would love to find a correct box for it.

Once again thank you for all the replies.

Dave

Welcome Dave. The model 49 came out in 1959 and had a shrouded hammer frame so yes, not the correct box obviously. Best bet on finding a box is Ebay. Plug in a saved search and wait. Keep in mind your "49" box has some value as well. Smith box prices have been blowing my mind lately.

Welcome! That's a great starter set - spans the Post-war years. If you're like the rest of us, they'll have a few friends along shortly. :)

Ed makes a very good point about the box. In fact, the M 49 box would make a good trade for a correct box in this forums classified section. The M 49 boxes are not that plentiful to find.

Model 49 upper right, for reference:

Thanks for hanging in there over two years until you made your first post! 1956 was a very good year, I was born in '56 also. And, I graduated from the police academy in 1980, but, unfortunately, I did not get a gun for a graduation present! However, when my son graduated from the police academy over 5 years ago I gave him a 29-2 6.5" blue as a gift.

I do have a 19-3 6" i picked up on GB a few years ago. Super fun to shoot. At my brother-in-law's place he set up some old fire extinguishers at a range-finder measured 125 yards. From a seated position, I was able to hit them regularly once I got my elevation down, with magnum loads. Fun plinking gun.

Welcome to the forum, and I envy you that little .32 I-Frame. That's a dandy.

welcome...nice flat latch. model 19/66...who does not love them??

Funny it took me two years to post something. Its been about two years since I took that .32 out of the box. Now all of a sudden I have an urge to find out more about it. Good idea on trading the box.
